1st month TTC baby #1

Hi everyone,

This is my first post and first month ttc.  I am using fresh donor sperm from a donor that lives about 4 hours away.  I have a few questions that I am hoping someone has insight on and also just want to get involved in the community.  I am writing a lengthy post here to describe my situation.

I am trying not to be too excited since it is the first month.  I am in the 2ww window now.  I am not up on all the abbreviations yet that surround the ttc community.  Here is my story so far:  As of right now I don't think my chances are very good for a BFP this time.  I got a hotel room (donor prefered method of AI exchange).  I had the intention if using SoftCups to have a better chance of keeping the donation next to the cervix.  Once the SD left I realized I forgot to get the SoftCups.  I was with a family member, who knew all about what was going on and came with me as protection since this was the first hotel meeting with the SD. She thought it would be best to go out and get the SoftCups to possibly boost my chances of a BFP since I had already took time off work, paid for the room, etc. We decided it would be best to take the sample with us while we went to the store incase hotel cleaning crew came to the room and tossed it out.  It was not a very hot day, but it was about an hour from the time he donated until insemination (it was only in the car for about 20-30 minutes and the air conditioning was on).  Turned out that I didnt use the SoftCups.  I tried one out before inseminating and the way it felt as I used it seemed to push along the cervix and I was afraid it would push the sample away from the cervix. By the time I inseminated, the semen was clear in color and had been out for almost exactly 1 hour.  I laid down after for about 30-45 minutes with my pelvis elevated.

I have been using the OPK's as well.  I inseminated on Sunday morning and didn't get a positive LH + until Monday night and Tuesday morning.  Did too much time pass?  I may be ovulating today or tomorrow which means the sperm would have to remain alive for 3-5 days (if they were still alive at insemination).

Does anyone have any experience with the semen sitting out before insemination, or know how long it can be out (Some research online showed that under a microscope, sperm can survive for hours after ejaculation)? Or does anyone have experience with the SoftCups and the potential for the semen to be pushed away from the cervix?  And any thoughts on if I could even still get a BFP this time around with all the variables?

Thanks for reading and for any advice!

  • We have had few folks post on this board recently just to stir up trouble, so I think many of us are a bit weary of folks who post stories/questions like this without having posted an introduction to the board.

We're queer. I'm 33, have severe stage 4 endo, and had both fallopian tubes removed. My love ("Manada" on the boards, 32) was diagnosed with diminished ovarian reserve. We did Partner IVF (my eggs, her uterus). We lost our twins Tavin and Casey at 21 weeks gestation.

    Our IUIs
with @Manada: IUI# 1-7 (December 2012- September 2013) all BFN. Tried natural, femara, clomid, puregon/follistim, clomid and menopur combo, both the ovidrel and HCG triggers.

    Our IVFs:
IVF #1 my eggs November/December 2013: Cancelled IVF due to poor response

    IVF #2 my eggs/Manada's uterus January/February 2014
BCPs and lupron overlap Stimmed: 1/22-2/2: Bravelle and Menopur (dosage ranged from B300 and M150 to B375 and M150 to B300 and M225)
2/4 retrieved 10 eggs. Endo was much worse than expected. Only 3 eggs fertilized; February 7 transferred two day 3 embryos, froze one. All great condition.
