utensils and eating

Question 1:

Do you still have LO use baby/toddler utensils?

I've started giving DS a regular fork sometimes because those safety forks are worthless for stabbing pieces of food, and that's what he wants to do. The baby spoons are sometimes worthless, too, depending on what he's eating. So I'm just curious what everyone else is doing.

Question 2:

Any tips for teaching proper scooping method? He's still pushing his food off the edge of the plate instead of onto the spoon/fork, and I've tried everything I can think of to help him figure it out. I don't even care if he uses his hand to try to push food onto the spoon, but he just won't do it.

Yes we have a variety of them. The all plastic ones and the metal ones.

  • We're struggling with this too. DS absolutely loves feeling like he's in control with his own utensils. We got him a set from Target for Easter that has a nice fork with a plastic handle and metal tongs. It seems to work really well. Spoons, I usually jus

DS uses regular utensils and has been for quite awhile. He is very independent when it comes to his food. It took awhile for him to figure them out but once he did there was no going back to mommy or daddy helping anymore.

  • I'll offer a utensil to DD2, and usually the choice of adult utensil vs. baby utensil will depend on the type of food. For things that require fork stabbing I'll go with the regular fork. For, say, hot cereal she does very well with a baby spoon since she

  • She uses plastic and regular.

Sometimes she uses it and sometimes she still uses her hand. She does use her hands a lot less.

My only advice is to not sweat it. They eventually get it without much teaching on your end. Over time
  • Dd also uses both.  The toddler ones we have are metal.  I honestly don't worry about helping. She's making progress, but I don't scold her for using her hands either. She'll get it one day.

  • 1.  We still give her toddler utensils, rubber handles with metal tines.  She does pretty well spearing things with the ones with metal tines.  And the spoons are bigger and more concave than the baby spoons, so she does pretty well gett

  • Thanks for the responses! Good to know he's about in the same place as the other kids.

I will probably start using bowls more often until he figures things out a bit more. He really wants to do it on his own, but then gets bored when he
