Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Sippy cup advice/help wanted.

DD understand how to drink from a sippy, but she doesn't understand how to hold it and tip it up by herself...she will only drink out of it if we hold it. Any suggestions on teaching her how to hold and tip it back for herself?

She picks it up and swings it around and will chew on it herself, but only drink if we hold it up for her.  So far, she is only getting water in the sippy.

  • We have the same issue. I'll be watching your responses for some advice! :)

I had that issue with my 9-month old, but we noticed a few times she got hold of my camelbak water bottle (if you're not familiar, it has a straw with a bite valve, so you can only get water through it if you're biting the valve slightly) and she was drinking out of that.  So we got her a couple of sippy cups with straws and she works pretty well with those.  My water bottle is still her favorite, though.  So maybe you could try one with a straw?  Hope that's helpful.
  • We had the same problem and went with the straw cup. Platex makes one that you can squeeze to help them figure out what to do. It leaks so not great long term but a good starter.
  • We use a zoli cup with a straw. No tipping needed! And we let her drink water from our cups and she does great.

  • We had the same issue and ds just all if the sudden figured out the holding and tipping one day. It was so out of no where. But we did go the straw cup route as well he loves straws so maybe give that a try

  • Hi! I'm new to this board but wanted to reply since I am going through this myself with my 11-month-old.

A little about me: DH and I have been married for almost 3 years. We had DD in May 2012 (she just turned 11-months yesterday), and we have a cute, little doggie. In a couple of months we will be TFAS.

So the sippy cup... We noticed the same exact thing happening with DD. One thing we tried was limiting the amount of water we put in it. We thought the cup might be too heavy for her to tilt back by herself. So I only fill up the cup with about an inch of water. This actually seemed to work pretty well.

The other thing I tried was demonstrating to her how to drink out of it. I literally took her cup, tilted it up, and drank out of it. That seemed to work too because when I handed it back to her she imitated me.

My challenge now is to begin taking her off the bottle completely and only giving her a sippy cup for her formula. She's going in to daycare in August and will be expected to drink exclusively from a sippy cup by then.

    Hope some of this helps!

Did you know they make kids/baby camelbak cups?  Same is the adult ones but smaller?  dS1 loved those!

  • We were having the same issue. We were using the Playtex hard sippies then we switched to one that has a bite tip on it like the camelback (we got it at walmart) and when she bites the water squeezes out.  It took her awhile to get the hang of it but just over the last few days she's started tipping it back to get more water and sucking on it, too.  So I think we're making progress!

  • Sorry, my baby refused bottles and sippy cups and went straight to the straw.  She is breast-fed and drink small amounts of water from a cup and straw.  Good luck!!
