How to deal with a biter?

Jack is 10 1/2 months old, and for the past few weeks, he has been biting. I don't think it's a malicious thing, I'm pretty sure it's a teething thing. He chews on anything and everything. If I'm holding him, he will bite my arm or shoulder. He will also crawl up and bite my leg or something when we are sitting on the floor together. When I tell him no, he laughs and immediately tries it again. I've decided to start telling him "no" and "ouchie" when he bites, and to also say "ouchie" whenever he gets hurt so hopefully he will make that connection. Does anyone have the same issues or any advice? Thanks!

Re: How to deal with a biter?

  • Hi! I am really a lurker for the most part but DD has started biting too. It's like a thing I guess. They learn that they can use their teeth to bite. DD has all 8 teeth already so it hurts really bad when she does it -- I have bruises from it! I do the same thing tell her No, and ouch that it hurts mommy. She doesn't usually do it again. I think it's one of those things were you start with discipline: let me them know it's not ok and then distract them with something else so they don't bite again. I am not really a fan of this biting stage, haha! Hopefully it passes and she doesn't become THAT kid.

ugh, I know! I don't want him to be the weird kid at daycare who bites everyone! LOL. And it does hurt! Jack also has 8 teeth, and I have just as many bruises!

  • I don't know but DS just started doing this too, and he only has his two bottom teeth! If I'm holding him he "bites" my shoulder. If we are playing on the floor or even if just DH or I are standing he will crawl over and try to eat our feet. I don't know what to do to get him to stop but I want to figure it out soon before more teeth come in!!!

  • I literally could've written this entire post myself!!!  It's become such a problem.  My LO breaks skin and it really hurts!  We have tried saying NO sternly but now he just laughs and keeps trying.  Hoping he just gets over this.

  • From what I read on this (LO hasn't started biting yet but I know it's coming!) you use your voice so they can see the tone change and redirect them with something like "ow, don't bite mommy.  That hurts."  and redirect their attention to something else.
