Please help with salary negotiations

I'm just been offered a promotion and an 8% raise. I really want this promotion, but the money seems a little low. With this change in position, I would be salary instead of hourly which means I may need to stay late sometimes, telecommute on snow days (everyone else gets the day off), and the occassional business trip. But I also gain good stuff too.

I'm due for a review anyways and this type of raise is what I would normally get at review time so I feel like I'm getting the regular raise, but nothing extra for the change in position.

Any ideas on how to broach this subject, or if I even should?

  • Hmmm this is always tough. I definitely think that if you think the job's duties warrant more $, you should ask for it. You don't want to sell yourself short. Maybe you can say, "I really appreciate the opportunity. I was wondering if we could discuss

  • I would ask for it.  I would make a list of specific reasons why you will be handling more work and responsibility and thus deserve a larger pay increase.  I would ask whoever offered you the raise to have a meeting and discuss your reasoning.&n

  • Definitely ask for it... Explaining the valid reasons why you deserve it. You should never take the first offer in my opinion, the worst thing that happens is they say no, and no boss will ever blame you for asking for more money.

  • Don't focus on what % raise you're getting; instead, do some research into the salary for your new position (Glassdoor and other career sites have helpful info with this).

For example, if you make $50k now, don't think about a raise of 10% instea

  • Thank you guys for the advice. I think I'm just nervous because I always take what they give me, but this doesn't seem sufficient.  Wish me luck!

  • I agree with the above posters. I just have to say that you normally get an 8% raise at your annual reveiw? Wow!

ETA; I mean wow, that is a lot to get each year

  • Is there a bonus involved with the position? At my company 8 percent is good. When I was promoted to manager I got 7.5 percent but at that point I was bonus eligible and this year my bonus was over 20 percent of my salary and therefore I made over 20 perc
