STMs - Grocery Cart Cover??

When DH and I were registering and went a little gun crazy, we included one of these grocery cart covers (can also be used on restaurant high chairs):  https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=12353547

Will we really use this???  How many months use will we get out of it??

Re: STMs - Grocery Cart Cover??

  • We had one but never ever used it. I ended up selling it when she was a year old. It is up to you if you think you will use it or not. I just plain forgot it at home every time

That's what I'm thinking. On the small grocery trips, I'll just use the car seat...on the bigger ones, probably carry in the Ergo. Hmmmm...
  • I plan to get one. You can also use them on high chairs at restaurants so I figure it will be a good thing for us in the long run

  • We didn't use it with DD till she got thrush which is a yeast infection of the mouth. My pediatrician said it most likely came from a shopping cart since we sterilized everything that went in her mouth at that point after that we used it every time. We used one for DS1 and DS2 and plan on using it for DD2
  • We had one, but never used it. Most stores have purell wipes by the carts so I would use that. I also have wipes in the diaper bag for high chairs.

  • I had one, and almost never used it. My mom bought it for us. It is an infanto one, that is cute and covers front to back. Unfortunately, the sides weren't covered and my kids would always hold or lick that part of the cart. Blech.

My BF has one with fabric and elastic all the way around. She uses it religiously until it just doesn't work any more.

Babies use them from when they can start sitting up, generally around 6 months, until they outgrow them or decide they prefer to walk. So at least 6 months for most babies.

Eta. I find them to be more trouble then they are worth. I have to remember to take it in the store, I have to put it in the cart while holding baby, buckle baby in, etc. I also would take it in to wash it every week or two and then forget it in my laundry room... My BF was always horrified and uses hers every time.

  • We use ours all of the time we got out to eat at least once a week and use it for the highchair and we use it for shopping too.... she likes to look around and feels too constrained in the stroller and makes grocery shopping much easier we love ours... we got an eddie bauer one from Target .......
  • We used ours for a little while and then it just became too much of a pain.

  • I wasn't going to register for one but my mom wants to make me one so I'll gladly accept.  I plan on packing it in the diaper bag so I don't forge it when I'm out

We were given one and we use it a lot. We just keep it in the trunk of the car and take it out when we need it. Some people never use theirs, but I found it was very helpful especially when DS was smaller. It helped him sit up better in the cart when we were grocery shopping.

This! I liked it for the extra support in the cart and to keep dd's mouth off the dirty handle.

It's huge...I know ours wouldn't fit in the diaper bag.

  • I very highly doubt it will fit in the diaper bag. I know even all balled up ours didn't even come close.

We used ours for probably a month when DD could mostly sit on her own but did better with some support. It has never been a germ defense for us because it folds up on itself so the part that touched the cart or seat touches the part baby touches and transfers the germs anyway unless you wash it after every single use. Definitely not practical on a multi stop outing.

well poop.  I'll keep it by the door then with my reusable shopping bags I take to the store so I won't forget it.  being a FTM I'm sure I'll figure all these little things out when she's here lol

  • Nope. Didn't use ours.. And we have 3 littles. If you are a germaphobe - get it. If not - don't bother.

My kids to to daycare full-time so I always figured they are already little germ incubators... They are sick a lot as toddlers usually and then they are NEVER sick.

I have better things to do than fight with a shopping cart cover. Besides, my kids would end up playing with any exposed parts of the cart they could find/uncover anyway which kind of defeated the purpose....

  • Yep, we used ours all of twice. It was big, bulky and fussy. I also never felt like it was really secure. I use wipes on the shopping cart handles and high chairs. Never had an issue.

I think the more you can streamline your "going out crap" the more likely you are to actually enjoy going out.

  • I used mine they are nice

  • We never used one. I always wipe down the front bar on the cart before putting LO in it, other than that I feel like it's too bulky to carry around. Plus if there is a spontaneous stop you may not have it anyway. Wipes are more compact and easier to carry around.
  • We never used ours.  Always forgot it at home or in the car.  I ended up giving it to a friend terrified of germs and she did not use it once either.
  • We registered for one.  I would love to use it but primarily I think I'll give it to my aunt who will be taking care of LO while we're at work.  Once he's big enough I'd love for her to get out of the house and take him on her errands so I think she'd get more use out of it then I would on a day to day basis.

She's a germaphobe so I'm sure she'll like the idea.  My BTDT mom keeps hers in the car like Breanne said and it makes it easy to grab when you get to the store.

    My baby is ONE!!

  • I used mine so much! Shopping carts gross me out especially during flu season so I think they are a really good purchase!
  • I used ours for about 6 months (from when he could sit up in the cart/highchair to about a year old). It was worth the $25 or whatever. At that age he was likely to lick the cart/highchair or something and especially the highchairs were gross. Now I don't bother with it.

  • We used ours for a whole. I was really paranoid about germs, since DS had health problems when he was born. It was a pain to wipe down every surface on the cart that he could reach and it made it more comfortable to sit in the cart. Ours also had little toys attached, which was nice to keep him occupied during longer shopping trips.
  • I had one and never ever used it.

  • Wow thanks everyone! Never expected this topic to take off like it did. I'm personally not a huge germaphobe, but I know that has changed for friends of mine since becoming parents... Will have to think this one through!! LOL
  • I never used mine.  I'm in the camp that a little exposure to germs is a good thing.  I just let him sit in the cart then wiped down his hands when we got home.
  • We never used one, but I do see them around here and there.

  • I used mine ALL the time. But I'm a bit of a germaphobe, and babies put everything they can into their mouths, too gross for me. Clean cover yes please!

andplusso, if you want to be thoroughly grossed out, google how dirty are shopping carts. They are worse than outhouses.

  • I used it with my first from about 6 months to 8 months. I never used the one we have with my second. I don't think its worth the money. I always just wipe the cart down before sticking my kids in it.

  • I had one and we kept forgetting it at home.... So we barely used it.
  • We had one and used it religiously for probably 6 months. I liked it because a) it helped him sit up in the grocery cart when he was still a little unsteady, and b) when they are at that stage where they chew on everything, he would literally gum the handle of the shopping cart as we were moving. I don't care how much purell you use, that's gross.

Also, you can attach a toy to it so they can gum on that, yet it won't drop constantly. I recommend it.

  • Never used one. But I have a lot of friends who do use them. I am not a germphobe and tend to be really laid back about most things with my kid though.
