Re: Whiney new 2-year old

  • YES!!!!!! It drives me crazy, that is huge pet peeve of mine.  My SIL and I were just talking about it today, she's dealing with the same thing.

DD is a little older than your LO, but here's what we started doing.  Basically a week ago I sat her down at a time when she was in a good mood and explained the difference between a 'whiney' voice and a 'big girl voice'.  Gave her examples that type of thing.  I told her that we were going to work on using a 'big girl voice'.  Now every time she whines I say, "Uh Oh, find your 'big girl voice'" and most of the time she starts over using a non-whiney voice.  There have been a few times like yesterday where I just had to walk away and ignore her.  She of course melted down, but once she was done throwing her fit, she was ready to use her 'big girl voice' again.  There have even been a few times where she has said to me, "I used my big girl voice' in a very proud way.  I think it's just the age.

  • That's exactly when it started for us.  She's now 27 months and still whining strong!  No idea how to help.  I try to ignore it because she mostly does it when she is home with me.  Really hard to ignore and it doesn't seem to have helped.  If she's around other people & kids she acts like a normal child.

  • Yea, they get whiny now. It could also be the potty training, she is a little young for it.

  • I think whiny goes hand in hand with 2. We tell E that we can't understand him when he's whining and that usually gets him to stop
  • My DS just turned 2 a month ago and he is also very whiney. I just tell him that I cannot understand him when he is whining and that he has to use his big boy voice. He either screams more and I ignore him until he calms down other times he asks more nicely. But whining is such a pet peeve of mine, my mother hated it too so that is probably where I get it from.
