Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Solely on solids?

I just started solids with DS last week, so I know it will be a lonnng while before he is solely on solids, but are any of your LOs solely on solids (except for maybe a bottle before bed)?

DS really likes his solid food. I know that he needs his bottle (of formula, and we also nurse a few times a day) for his nutrients still, but when can I let him eat as much solids as he wants? I know that formula and/or breast milk can be his sole nutrients for up to one year, but what is the earliest it can be?

How much solid food should I be giving him? Until he's done, a few ounces, a few bites?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Solely on solids?

  • Babies NEED formula or BM until a year.  DD drinks 4 bottles a day. I'm before a year she might cut one out herself. I will always give her a bottle for breakfast, lunch and dinner atleast.

I'd suggest talking to your pedi more or atleast r

  • I feel like you should talk to your pediatricin about how much breast milk or formula your LO should be drinking a day. They should not be cutting out any at this point. I gave DD one meal a day an hour after she nursed at 6 months. At 7 months I gave her
  • Also, I would never give my baby or child as much food as they want...l would give them meals, but wouldn't let them just eat whatever, whenever you know?

  • As PPs have said, babies primarily need the nutrients in breastmilk or formula until they hit 1. My DD nurses 4-5 times a day and eats 2 meals, and she's on the lower end of the scale as far as how often she nurses. The chart from our pedi says at 6 month

  • DD drinks 4 6oz bottles/day but usually has a little left over in the bottom of the bottle (about the same amount as before we started solids.)  She gets 2 meals/day.  One about an hour after first bottle and then another about an hour after her
