GD meal/snack success?

We've been living in Germany for 2 months now and I'm TRYING to learn German and speak it whenever I can.  I think I understand things or know what I'm ordering and sometimes it's a success and other times... not so much.

Earlier, I ordered an "eiskaffee" or ice coffee, which apparently is NOT iced coffee.  When the barista said "ohne zahne?" I assumed he said "without sugar?"  When I got my drink, it appeared to be ice cream with coffee and milk poured over it- like a milkshake without the shake part.

And when I think of it, "zahne" means tooth and "zucker" is sugar.  Maybe he meant like a whipped cream or something.

At any rate, I had to drink some of it at least, I just paid nearly 4 euro for this thing!  So, I drank half, threw the rest out, and walked to the grocery store and back, carrying a load of groceries.

Got home about an hour later and just decided to test to check it out... and got a 99!  I thought that was pretty good considering my epic ordering fail!

Do you have any surprising successes to share?  Something that you discovered that you are able to eat (within whatever moderation/constraints)?

Re: GD meal/snack success?

  • Yes! Last night I had a mini ice cream cone from Drumstick and it was 17g of carbs which is over my 15g snack allotment. My number was 99 an hour after. So...I will be eating those more often!

  • If it's full fat it'll help keep your blood sugar steady. I did well with whole milk lattes (if I wanted flavor I'd get half the pumps of syrup) + a protein as a snack.

I also did well with cheesecake and whole fat ice cream. ;) The sugar-free/no

  • I've been having protein shakes for breakfast with milk and fruit which are both nonos in the morning and getting great numbers! Woot!

I love shakes and crave them and hate other breakfast foods right now. Its been wonderful!
