Must entertain DD during solids feeding

Anyone else going through this? DD has been getting solids for a month. Most days she clamps that cute little mouth shut when she see's the spoon coming.

If I entertain & distract her, she takes 1 1/2-2 oz no problem. She has clear "I am full" cues that are different such as smacking the spoon & turning her head away. I listen to these.

I just don't want to do a song and dance every mealtime.

Re: Must entertain DD during solids feeding

  • If she doesn't want it I wouldn't give it to her.  She'll be willing when shes ready.

  • I had to do that with DD1, she would play with all the food in the bowl and try to shovel in her mouth with complete failure, but as soon as a spoon came her way she wanted nothing to do with it. For 4 months I dealt with either letting her attempt to do it (which was crazy messy), or singing and peek-a-boo during solids. I think it just depends on the kid, some are just stubborn, even if they are hungry. I don't think it always means they don't want to/aren't hungry though.

  • Our 6 month old LO gets easily distracted while eating solids (and BFing during the day). So I sing quietly to him so that he really has to listen, which gets his attention to eat. He eats quite a bit, it is just that he's really alert and likes to look around.

  • It could just be that shes not quite interested yet, babies usually get really into solids at around 6 months. I noticed your little one is just now that age. Just be patient, a lot can change in just a week or so for babies.

  • I think at this age, sometimes that's what you've got to do!  Sometimes DD is all about eating, other times I need to do airplanes and sing songs.

  • I've been doing the whole "Here comes the choo-choo train" thing to get the spoon in his mouth, and it actually works really well. He laughs and smiles at my silliness and seems pleased when I get the spoon in. He is capable of eating without me putting on a show, but it seems to make it more fun for both of us. Sometimes I feel like a circus clown doing all this goofy stuff to prompt my kid to do something, but if it works I guess it's worth it.

  • My DD does the same thing. I'm hoping it is just a phase and I don't have to sing "5 green and speckled frogs" every time we eat until she is 12. LOL.

A few things that have worked for me:

    - using a metal spoon instead of a baby plastic spoon, maybe because it's shiny?

    - when feeding table food, just using my fingers to feed her rather than a spoon, or she holds it and I help guide it into her mouth

    - giving her a mum mum to entertain herself, and then sneaking in the spoon when the mum mum is not in her mouth
