Delayed Cord Clamping?

I recently heard the term "delayed cord clamping" for the first time and now I'm curious to know other moms' experiences with this.

I did a Google search and everything I read about the practice was positive, but all the sites were clearly trying to promote the "pros" of delayed cord clamping, so I don't know if there is a "con" side to the practice.

Has anyone heard anything negative about doing this? Has anyone asked their doctor about doing this and been flat out refused? Whether or not my doctor is willing to do this is on my list of questions for my next OB appointment, but I wanted to get all the background info I could before going into the doc.

  • I asked about this at our childbirth class last night. The nurse teaching the class said that all of the delivering dr's there delay cord clamping unless it's an emergency. I haven't heard any bad things about it and the fact that all the dr's that del

  • I don't know how long ago this happened, but at some point there was a theory that the cord was somehow causing jaundice.  That if you don't clamp and cut it right away the blood flows from the baby to the placenta, causing blood loss for the baby

  • I have delayed cutting all three of my children's cords and plan on doing it again with our fourth. Like others have said the only con is that it takes time . With my first it was around 20 min , with my second just over half and hour and with my third it
  • The biggest con is the possibility of Jaundice. However, the world health organisation still recommends delayed cord clamping where there is access to jaundice treatment.

ETA: here are a couple of studies if you're interested.

  • My OB and I have decided against it bc I'm not opposed to a reduced iron store and would rather potentially give an iron supplement and hopefully reduce the risk of jaundice.

  • The main "risk" is that it increases jaundice because you put more blood in the baby, which gives more red blood cells to break down. In return, your baby gets full iron stores and is much less likely to be anemic.

We delayed for about 3 minutes

  • I thought that delayed cord clamping can increase the risk of bleeding for us, and that's why it was common practice for so long?

At my hospital they delay for everyone unless there is an emergency.
