Natural Birth

Input on birth preferences

This is what I have- one page for the main stuff, a second, smaller page for the C-section part. I'd like to keep it short and sweet.

Dear Staff- As a second-time mom who has been through the process before, I understand that labor and delivery do not always go as planned. I am aware that if a serious medical situation occurs we will have to adjust our expectations, however at this point I have enjoyed a low-risk, healthy pregnancy without complications and am hoping for my second med-free birth. We appreciate the support and understanding as we strive to meet that goal as we welcome our baby girl. Thank you!

I DO consent to the following:

-a Heplock

-Intermittent fetal monitoring

-Minimal vaginal exams during labor

-Students or residents present during labor

-Pitocin given post birth

-Local pain relief for the repair of any tears

-Vitamin K for the baby

-Cord cut by husband 10-15 minutes after birth

I do not want:

-Pitocin during labor

-Pain medication offered during labor.  I will ask if needed.

-Any medical procedures done on myself or my baby without consent.

-An episiotomy. I prefer to tear naturally.

-The baby given bottles or pacifiers. We are hoping to exclusively breastfeed.

-Hep B vaccine or erythromycin eye ointment for the baby.

-Baby removed from my presence or room. If for any reason I am put under GA or unable to be with the baby, I would like my husband with her at all times.

In the event of a C-section:

-I do not want my hands or arms restrained.

-I would like a low, horizontal incision.

-I would like to hold and nurse the baby as soon as possible.

-I would like one labor support person to stay with me at all times.

-Please offer anti-anxiety or anti-nausea meds if they are a safe option.

I don't think I'm missing anything- I really just want what is most crucial to me but if there's anything you think is super important that I don't have, please let me know. I didn't feel the need to mention lights dim, laboring in water, pushing how I want, etc, because I just plan to do it as long as things are okay. Also input on how it's worded? My doula suggested putting what I do consent to first so it comes across positively.

Thanks!

Re: Input on birth preferences

  • Mother-directed pushing was the only other thing that jumps out at me as something I really wanted. I knew that if someone started telling me to "push to the count of 10" or something like that, it would annoy the hell out of me.

  • I agree with pp about mother directed pushing.  Also, you talk about newborn procedures, have you thought about whether you want baby's first bath?

I would put that is wanted the baby handed to me right away as long as nothing is wrong.  That was something that wasn't done with my son and I was really upset, I thought he wasn't breathing the way they carted him off.
