I am a teacher and I fall under a policy in which my age and years of service must equal 90. We just received an email clarifying years of service. We have to work a certain amount of days to consider it a working year. Before DD I had saved up enough sick days that I could be on maternity leave for 12 plus weeks, with the help of school breaks, without having my pay docked to pay a substitute. According to this policy, if you miss more days than you have sick days for and are docked, then you lose days that are used to calculate years of service. It's just another sucky reminder of how maternity leave policy sucks in the U.S. We use our sick days to stay home with our new babies, then get docked for doing it. Sorry if this makes no sense, but I just had to vent.
