Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Recommend Your Books!

DD is getting sick of her current bedtime books. We try to read books with a sleep or bedtime or naptime theme before bedtime and naps to get her in the mood to sleep, but the ones she has now we've read a million times and she has started telling me "Not dis one" when I pick up her old faves! Sad!

She is 19 months old.

Re: Recommend Your Books!

  • Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons (I love this one!)
Pinkalicious books (though she's a bit dramatic)
Anything Dr. Suess-y that you don't already have
K is for Kissing a Cool Kangaroo
The Dot (or anything by Peter H. Reynolds--love him)

These have all gone through phases of being the favorite in our house :)

  • We read "Goodnight Moon" and" Goodnight, I Love You" every night. He is sort of obsessed with Goodnight Moon and whines for it frequently.

  • I WISH LO would get tired of the same books and pick a different one!  I bought a new one last night in hopes he'll latch onto something different...but not looking forward to it potentially wearing out it's welcome: Big Blue Truck Leads the Way...or someting like that. We'll see.

Here's what we're reading multiple times each day: Goodnight Moon, Goodnight Gorilla (and I think this one is lame!), three different Thomas books (He's obsessed with Thomas), also this book about Johnny Appleseed (I have no idea why, it was one of DH's from when he learned about him in the 1st grade)...other frequent requests include any book with peekaboo flaps/mirrors, monkeys, or tactile parts.

We have Brown Bear Brown Bear, and many Sandra Boynton books as well. We have others too, but I think they're too long for his attention span right now.

  • The only real bedtime book we have is Goodnight Moon.  Which I hate and think is the stupidest book in the world.  But DH loves it and he does story time each night, so they usually read 1-2 other books and then end with that.

The other books in the bedtime rotation are:

    Caps for Sale

    The Little Engine That Could

    When I Was Born

  • My mother actually found a 12-pack of bedtime stories at Costco that he really likes. But I don't see them on Amazon.

We read a lot of the same ones already listed here. Also:

The Night Night Book (Marianne Richmond)

Sleep Like a Tiger (Mary Logue)

Good Night Little Bunny (Jane Yolen)

Sleep Baby Sleep (Maryann Cusimano Love)

You Are My I Love You (Maryann Cusimano Love)

Just Go to Bed (Little Critter)

One Bear at Bedtime (Mick Inkpen)

Good Night Little Bear (Richard Scarry)

We 'audition' a lot of his bedtime stories via the public library. And remember interlibrary loan. If they don't have some of these at your branch, they can special order them for you from another, even out of town.

  • Also, for the Good Night, Good Night, Construction Site families, that writer/artist team has just released a new one called Steam Train, Dream Train. With circus animals.

We've ordered it but it hasn't arrived yet.

  • Screen time be damned, our whole family loves the Nighty Night ap on our iPads.  It's a little story about the whole town going to sleep, except the animals at the farm house.  Then you tap on the windows with the lights on and it goes into the animals' rooms where you have to shut off the lights so they can go to sleep.  We got it when it was the free featured ap of the week a month or two ago, but it's worth the $3 or whatever it costs, if you have an iPad.

DD also currently loves The Cat Who Walked Across France, which we have out from the library right now.  It's something different than the usual suggestions, anyway.

  • I go to the library once a week and check out enough books for a week. That way she never gets tired of the books(and we don't either!) Maybe try that?
