Need? No. But I found it was nice to have one for each of them. Mine were not next to each other - DD1 behind driver, DD2 behind passenger - so one mirror could not be placed to see both at the same time. They liked having their own, too, it entertained them when we traveled.

I like having 2 mirrors for both kids. Both of them are still RFing and we still use 2 mirrors. They are at an age now where they like to see themselves in the mirrors and I like to see what they are doing. We won't be ditching them until we switch them FFIng (not sure when that will be).
Both of mine are rear facing and we have a mirror for each of them. I like to be able to see them both and there is no where to place a mirror where I could see both of them in one.

This. Both of mine will be RF so I just bought a second mirror for $10.
i never got a mirror cause the childcare class i took told me no mirrors. at what age does it become safe to use them? thanks!
It never becomes safe because any object in your car can be a projectile in an accident. The thing is though, unless you keep your car and trunk empty, there are probably quite a lot of things that could be projectiles so it's up to you to decide. I am thinking of getting the Britax mirror because it attaches around all 4 sides of the headrest so I don't think it could come off in an accident.
We were 2 under 2, now 3 under 3!
