Question Regarding Growth Scans

Are those who are having these in some type of high-risk category?  GD?  I ask because I didn't have one with my first and there has been no talk of this during this pregnancy.

Re: Question Regarding Growth Scans

  • Most women don't get them. Mine was because of a low birth weight with my first due to a medical condition.

If you're having an uneventful pregnancy, gaining appropriately and measuring on track, I wouldn't expect a Dr to bring it up.

  • This is my first LO...our doctor scheduled one May 3 because I had been measuring 3 weeks early quite consistently, so they just wanted to check. Other than was measuring larger, my pregnancy has been uneventful.
  • I've had them because of SUA (single umbilical artery) and they need to periodically check and make sure that she is still growing fine. It isn't standard to get them though; I was told that the 20 week a/s would be my last unless there was a problem, whi

  • Mine was because I developed preeclampsia and started measuring way ahead around 35 weeks. I was also hoping for a VBAC so they wanted a size idea to rule in favor or against that too.
  • Thanks ladies.  I really wasn't sure if it was just more common now (even in the short time it's been since my last baby) or if it was something medical.

I wish you all healthy-sized babies and uneventful deliveries.  :)

  • I don't think it's a standard practice by any means. I've had a couple but that was because they needed to check whether my placenta had moved up (it was very low lying) and because I've been measuring consistently small and they wanted to make sure the b

  • I actually have one today. My LO is measuring 3 weeks ahead so they want to make sure my fluid levels are fine and possibly an induction sometime soon. I'm almost 37 weeks but measuring 40! Since we're a tall family they aren't too concerned about his le
  • My SIL has them every week (now every couple of weeks) and that's because of an issue with blood flow to the placenta so they monitor the baby's growth and she takes aspirin daily.

If everything is going smoothly the usual is two scans (12 weeks

  • I would have them because of MTHFR and family history of blood clots especially those found in the placenta. So I had weekly BPPs and a growth scan every couple of weeks.

  • Yes, I am. I'm insulin dependent, 4x a day. Also with low fluid, not severely low, but low enough they are concerned with it.

  • I was measuring small last week, and they scheduled a growth scan for me. I was happy because I got to see my LO again. I'm perfectly healthy- no GD or any other medical issues. Baby was in the 39th percentile for weight, so everything was good.

  • I didn't get one until I develop HBP at 34 weeks.  I guess that can cause limited nutrients to get to the baby so they've done two just to make sure she is still growing on target.  It's a good thing you don't need one.  It means everything

  • I am getting one in combination with my u/s to check baby's position because she is still transverse right now.
  • Like the PPs said, it's usually because you're measuring ahead or behind or because of some other medical condition. I didn't get one because I'm measuring right on track and haven't had any other issues. My OB told me back in January that my anatomy scan
