Postpartum Depression

so sad

I am currently 27 weeks pregnant for the first time with twins and I spend most of my days crying. I have a long history of depression and worked very hard to get of medication so that we could get pregnant. Now I am not sure if I am crying b/c of hormones or depression. I am very worried that I will have ppd once these babies are here. I will have only 6 weeks of maternity leave and fear that going back to work and being a mother to twins will be so hard that my depression will deepen.

What signs should I be on the look out for once these babies are born?

How soon after they are born should I expect ppd to "kick" in if it has not already while being pregnant?

Do obgyn's release you "clear" to work even if mentally you are not once they believe your physical health is ok?

Do you know if maternity leave can be extended past the set six weeks based on mental health?

I have a dr. appt. in 2 weeks and will be speaking with my OB then, however I would love to hear other peoples words of wisdom.

  • I'm so sorry you're feeling this way. Depression is horrible. Unless you have been through it, no one can really understand. I suffered from ppd after DS was born. I loved him more than anything but cried all the time and had panic attacks. I worried about everything and hated every second of him getting bigger/older. I am set to be induced this Friday and began feeling depression/anxiety in the last couple of weeks. I began taking Zoloft today and hope it kicks in quick. I know it is normal for women to feel "baby blues" after birth but that goes away within a couple of weeks whereas depression stays. I would definitely bring it all up to your doctor if you haven't already. It is not something you need to suffer from. Have you thought about medication? I know there are safe meds to take during pregnancy. It is good you're being proactive about it though and aware of how you are feeling. Hormones are awful. I would definitely look into extending maternity leave if you are able to. You will want as much time with your babies as possible. Maybe try getting in with your doctor sooner so you can get help sooner? Don't feel bad...many women go through it :(

  • I had postpartum with my first, but it only lasted about 10 days.  It was basically a 10 day long panic attack, but I made it through it.   I would suggest seeing a psychiatrist that is actually trained in these problems.  Most people assume that if your OB or your general doctor prescribes you something then it is safe.  THIS IS SO NOT TRUE.  This is coming from someone who has been on meds before when I was really young and had to fight to get off of them.  Same with my hubby.  It sounds cliche, but any doctor, especially psychiatrists will tell you, lack of exercise and activity is one of the leading causes of depression, and the most effective way to get rid of it, or at least rule out other things is to be more active.  I hope things get better for you.
