~*~*MSPI Moms Weekly Check-In*~*~

Welcome! This is a check-in for moms who are/were on a dairy free and/or soy free diet due to their LO's intolerance. The check-ins will be posted every Monday morning on the Breastfeeding board and XP'd to the Food Allergy board. If you'd like to join the group, just post an intro here and dive in!

To check out the archive of our previous check-ins, please see the MSPI Moms Blog.

QOTW: For the veteran moms, how and when did you introduce foods back to your diet and/or to your LO? For the newer MSPI mamas, how and when do you plan to do so?

Re: ~*~*MSPI Moms Weekly Check-In*~*~

  • Good question!
I talked to the pedi last week and she suggested around 9 months to give LO a sippy of WCM, with Benadryl on hand, and just see what happens. I feel like this is a bad idea, but MH is on board. So I will be very interested to see what everyone else has to say. I thought I would be more comfortable with consuming dairy myself, then nursing her but if it doesn't go well then I guess I'll have all that dairy in my system. So that's no good either. I think I'd rather wait until closer to 12 m than the 9 m the pedi suggested.

  • **Sorry I'm not able to post these check ins earlier - it's still morning on the west coast!**

I have mostly accidentally tried reintroducing milk and soy to my diet. When DS was about 7 mo I popped a Benadryl without checking the ingredients first, and it had lactose in it. Around 11 mo I had an almond milk latte made with Silk Almond milk, and I think it must have been contaminated with soy. Both times he got loose, foul-smelling poop. This last week I did my first intentional introduction, and unfortunately 1 or 2 accidental ones. :( On Friday I gave DS some egg yolk for the first time (I'm egg-free as well for those who can't see my siggy). I was hoping I could add egg back to my diet soon because mamas, I am hungry. I wanted to give it directly to DS first so it wasn't lingering in my system in case it didn't sit well with him. On Saturday he hardly ate anything, so I was thinking maybe it upset his tummy. Then we went to a brunch where I ate cinnamon rolls someone specially made for me that should have been safe. I also stupidly ate some bean salsa, and the beans may not have been MSPI-safe (stupid, stupid!!). Then on Sunday I realized a medication I refilled last week was not from the same supplier as what I'd had before, and when I looked up the ingredient list online it had lactose as the first ingredient! Sunday morning DS had a huge, smelly, loose poop. He had several more throughout the day, and gas, and hardly ate anything. So now I don't know if it was the egg, the lactose, or possibly soy in the beans, or maybe all 3... Anyway, this is getting long, but I am pretty bummed out today. I feel so bad for making DS feel bad, and I'm pretty discouraged that I won't be able to reintroduce anything to my diet for awhile still. I'm hungry all the time and I keep losing weight. I feel like crying this morning. :'(

Anyway, thanks for listening mamas. I hope things are going better for you.

  • I hadn't really thought much about it since we were just diagnosed, but I was thinking close to a year I would try something myself.  I hadn't thought about it lingering in my system, so I'm not sure.  Do you think I could have her try those yogurt bite things for toddlers.  I have not looked at them so I don't know much about them.  As of right now we are just restricted on dairy, but we will do testing again next week to see if she is doing better.  If not we will probably go soy free as well.

Hugs girl. It's hard. I eat a ton of baked sweet potatoes and Lara bars to keep myself full. I hope things get better soon.

  • im very interested to see what others have to say. ds is 15 months and currently we are waiting until 18 months to reintroduce dairy, soy, and egg as per his allergist. however, he said he recommends 18 months to everyone so it's not like this is tailored to him. he said to give it straight to ds so it doesnt taint my milk. im torn bc altho that is true, i would think his tummy would hurt more getting it straight i/o through my milk. i havent heard of anyone else waiting until 18 months, i usually hear 12. anyone else waiting this long? if so, did the dr give any good reasons?

  • Hi ladies!
I've been watching this thread for a little while now and I wanted to introduce myself. I hope I'm not crashing here! I'm 29 and I'm due in July with my little boy. My 2 and a half year old had dairy and soy issues when I breast fed her and unfortunately I only lasted about 4 to 5 months doing so. I'm hoping to do better this time around and try harder if he has food issues. I know all babies are different, but I'm already starting to think I'm going to have to go back to the restrictive diet soon and seeing you say how you're hungry all the time really brings me back. Good luck to all of you!
  • Our pedi said to try giving DD2 dairy at 12 months. She suggested trying yogurt first, then cheese, then WCM. DD2 is 15 months now and I still haven't done it...DD1 is allergic to dairy (and soy and eggs), so I'm afraid of DD2 not only having an MSPI reaction to milk, but possibly a true allergic reaction. She's been able to tolerate baked in dairy and soy in my diet since about 10/11 months. I haven't really been very adventurous in eating major dairy or soy yet. I bought yogurt for me to eat a couple times, but both times I ended up letting it expire and tossed it out. : /

((Hugs)) to you, rocknrollfriend! I'm sorry you guys have been having a rough time. Have you seen a dietitian to help with your diet? I had trouble losing too much weight too. Speaking with a dietitian was helpful. I think it's a really good idea when you're on such a restricted diet. I hope things get better for you guys in the near future.

  • How funny, this weeks topic is exactly what ive been going through.

My LO is 8 months and I just started very slowly trying to re introduce things into my diet to see how she would do.

I started with soy lecithin--in bread, soy oil--in dressing & rice, and soy flour--in waffles and so far the only thing I have noticed are some dry patches on her skin (maybe the eczema starting again but nothing bad) I haven't had straight soy protein yet because I am scared lol

Then with the dairy. I had butter--in the form of a croissant (it was my only option at a bridal shower so I figured it would be my test food), then a very small slice of lasagna (ricotta and mozzarella) and so far no reaction!

Eggs & shell fish are the last thing I have on my list. Both items have been iffy for me since I didnt know if they really caused a reaction with lo or not so Ive just mostly steered clear.

The only "reaction" we have had is I made french toast the other day and I gave LO a piece to suck on (which she loved) and her hand got a tiny bit red and her face was a tinsy bit read but it wasn't bad. I of course freaked out and gave her Benadryl but she was totally fine. I honestly dont know if it was the eggs or the cinnamon.

Pedi also suggested doing a milk test by bringing her in at a year and giving her some milk to see if she has a reaction but that really doesnt sound good to me, and I may not even give her cows milk to drink when she weans any way so when it gets closer we will have to talk about that and re evaluate.

  • Thanks for the hugs ladies. DS did ok at daycare today and ate a bit more, so I think he is feeling better, which makes me feel better.

shotzie, I haven't seen a dietician. I keep thinking, oh, it's only temporary, I can get through it! But since it's looking like it might be awhile yet before I can eat more, I might have to find one. Did you get a referral or just find one yourself?

morrkim, I haven't looked at the yogurt bites either. Maybe see what your pedi suggests. I'm not sure there's any one right way to do the reintro.

brideinsummer, my pedi said most babies outgrow MSPI around 12 months, but I have heard from other ladies in this group that their LOs didn't outgrow it until later. Obviously with my DS that is the case too.

welcome zoeyjack! I hope you can share some wisdom with us, and that your baby boy ends up not being MSPI!

I didn't realize we had so many mamas here with multiple food intolerances!

  • Hi! I'm late to this. At our 6 month, pedi said I could try introducing hidden sources of milk [I am only milk free] like breads and cookies. So far it is going ok. I haven't noticed any funky poop or eczema. Our pedi said at 9 months he could try yogurt or soy yogurt. She said that babies may tolerate yogurt better. I'm thinking I won't be able to enjoy cheese until DS is weaned. It is a bummer but I'm ok with that for right now.

Rocknroll, hang in there!!! You're doing a great job!

  • Hi, I don't post around here often, but was hoping to get some advice from this group!  My son is 12.5 months old, and I have been soy and dairy free since he was about 5-6 months.

He can now handle it if I have some soy, but if I go too far, he feels it.

Our pediatrician wanted us to reintroduce to him at 12 months, but I had an accidental exposure to dairy and it didn't go well, so I haven't given to him directly.

The pedi gave us instructions for introduction, start with dairy, then soy.  If those fail, my son is to go onto a hypoallergenic formula (he won't drink them), or we can look at alternative milks.  He's been on hemp for a little while and he loves it.  We recently tried homo goats milk, which was another alternative that our pedi recommended.

I'm pregnant again, so wan't to be prepared to wean in case my supply drops.  I'm worried to wean onto one of the alternative milks, as he is not a great eater and I want to ensure he's getting enough fat and nutrients.

Has anyone with an MSPI child used goats milk successfully?

We've had no poop issues, but he's been very gassy since we've given it to him.  I'm not sure if he just needs some time to get used to it?  I have an appt with the pedi coming up, but wanted to check what you guys have experienced.

    Thanks!

  • I am a week and half into dairy free and it's not as bad as I expected. My biggest issue is that I think it has caused a drop in my calorie intake, which has resulted in a slight drop in my supply. LO still seems satisfied when I nurse, but my production when pumping has gone down. Any suggestions on that would be great.

As far as re-introducing, I'm not sure. LO is 5 months old. We are trying dairy free not under doctor supervision, just trying it out due to what we perceived as excess gas, fussiness, and more often than not green, mucousy poop. He's had no other symptoms - no puking (he barely spits up), no rash, even his fussiness is short-lived and seems directly related to gas and once he passes it or poops, he's fine - so I'm sort of thinking a milk intolerance, not a full-blown allergy at this point. I'm also starting with just dairy free and not worrying too much about soy right now. We have already noticed a slight improvement in just this week's time, so we are going to keep up like this until his 6-month appointment (we will be one month dairy free at that point) and see what the doctor has to say.

Sorry I can't be of more help, I haven't given DS any alternative milks or goats milk yet. I was thinking of giving him goats milk before cow milk, but he still nurses a ton so he doesn't really need any other source of milk right now. I would talk with your pedi about making sure he gets the nutrition he needs. I've seen the question come up on this board several times about kids who are weaning but don't really like cow milk, so you might post this question to the board.

    Congratulations!

It is hard to get enough calories on this diet. Nuts and avocado are good dense calorie and fat sources. And just eating a lot more of whatever you are eating. I've had to make preparing and eating food a 3rd full time job.

You might try new membranes on your pump, too, if you haven't replaced them  yet. :)

  • I am trying my son on soybean oil when he turns 9 months.  This is about 2 weeks away.  I pondered over to give it to him or eat it myself.  I decided to give him small pieces of bread with soybean oil (he's already had my "safe" bread and likes it) and also some baby food that contains some soy. If that goes OK, then I will try adding some preferred foods to my diet -- i.e. regular bread, regular mayo, and a few other things that I like.

I pretty much expect him to be over it (DS1 was over it by 9.5 months, and we have no idea how much sooner than that it might have been).  My pediatrician was on board with the plan of trying when he is 9 months.

If all that goes well, I will try giving him dairy at 10 months -- in the form of cheese and yogurt first.

  • Greetings!  DD is 5 1/2 months and we discovered her milk protein allergy the end of January.  Everything was going great until Christmas and the she started projectile vomiting everything she ate and then of course, the poor baby doesn't want to eat.  Our cardiologist admitted us to the hospital for possible heart failure (DD has a heart defect -AV Canal) and we found severe acid reflux.  Several weeks later when the meds helped only slightly, we saw a gastroenterologist and were told about her MPI.  I EP and then add formula to her bottle of BM for added calories.  We tried Alimentum, but baby girl REFUSED to eat anything with the Alimentum in it.  I can't blame her, it stinks!  So we ended up adding Saff Flower oil to her bottles.  For the most part, I think we've gotten things under control, but Lord help us if I accidentally get dairy.  DD screams all day and throws up everything.

My Dad suggested Chinese one night and he said he'd check on the dairy.  When  he returned he said they didn't use dairy, but somewhere in their food ....  Poor V was miserable.  I didn't tell my father because he would feel guilty.

i have to admit, eating out is getting hard!  We are on the go a lot hence the acting out.  We only go to the same places over and over and I order the same exact thing each time.  I AM SO BORED WITH MY FOOD CHOICES!  What do you do?

  • Hi All, I'I'm not sure if my little man has a specific allergy or not. He has been extremely fussy the last week or so and has a terrible rash. I have tried a ton of different things to see if it was just sensitive skin. I took him to the peds walk in clinic and the doctor thinks he is just having a reaction to laundry detergent. I have been washing all of his clothes in dreft and started washing everything from sheets to our blankets and the rash is still terrible.  I notice that he gets really red and the rash seems to get worse when he is eating.  The rash is on his face, ears, head, neck, and chest.

How did you find out your kids were allergic to specific foods? Did you start cutting out one food at a time or completely cut out them all at once?

I need help figuring this out. I have been putting an exzema lotion on his face which seems to help a little bit, but still doesn't stop him from getting a break out while eating. Any advice would be helpful.

     Thanks!

I'm not sure dreft is all that great, maybe try a free and clear detergent instead? I cut out dairy, then soy, because they are the most common foods babies react to, and from there it was a guessing game with the top 8 allergens. You might try posting on the Food Allergy board for more advice. Good luck!

To the PP about getting bored with food choices.. I feel ya. I have started making most of my own food. I try to make big batches of quick and easy to eat food and freeze portions. I have a Pinterest board to save recipes which is really convenient, since I have the app on my phone. MSPI Mama is on Pinterest and has a ton of recipe boards in all different categories, it's great! Good luck.
