1st Trimester

6 weeks, 4 days - low heart rate (98) - Will I miscarry?

Hi Ladies - we had our first us yesterday and the doctor initially said that everything looked great.  At the last minute she came back and said the heart rate was a little low (98).  Then it seemed as though they were preparing me for a miscarriage.  I now have another us scheduled for next week to either confirm an increase in heartbeat or a possible loss.  Does anyone remember what their baby's heart rate was at 6 weeks?  Did the doctor seem concerned?  I'm totally worried now and I don't know how I'm going to get through another week of waiting.

  • My doctor didn't tell me the heart rate so I don't know but sending T&Ps your way.

  • The heart only begins to beat sometime in week 6 and it starts at zero so it takes time to ramp up.  Yes, 98 is low compared to what it WILL be but for all anyone knows, it just started beating that very day.

  • Mine was 126bpm at 6w1d.  That being said, it can be a matter days as to when the heart actually starts beating.  Yours might have just started and will gradually increase in rate as time goes on.

  • They generally like to see 100+ but remember your babys heart just started ticking. Sending you T's n P's. Stay positive, the good thing is that the heart was beating!

  • I just had my first ultrasound on Monday and had a similar experience. I was 6w2d exactly (we did IVF so we know when conception occurred) and I measured 6w1d and the heart rate was 96-98 bpm. My doctor said that they're just happy to see a heartbeat at t

  • Nelli -That's really a relief to hear.  Thanks.  Yes I'm measuring based on my LMP.  Also my cycles were really unpredictable.  The last cycle in particular was super short.  I don't know if that has anything to do with it.
  • When I was 7 weeks the dr couldnt even find a heartbeat and thought we had miscarried. Two weeks later at 9 weeks the heartbeat was 175.

  • I am dealing with this as well. My ultrasound at 6w1d showed a heart rate of 80, the doctor told the baby "will die soon". Big jerk. I sobbed on my couch for 3 days. I mourned my baby that was still alive inside of me. Then I called my doula and midwif

  • Thanks to everyone for replying.  It's been really comforting and I appreciate it.
  • This is one reason many doctors don't even like to confirm pregnancy till around 8 weeks. Things are very hard to evaluate before then. Try not to stress yourself. T&P!
  • I wouldn't jump to conclusions based on the heart rate. How did they "seem to prepare you for a miscarriage"? What did they say to cause you concern?

You could be behind a little bit. How big did your baby measure?

113 at 5w6d, but as PPs said, these things vary greatly, especially in the first couple of weeks as the heart starts to beat. hoping and praying for the best for your next U/S!
