Pregnant after 35

I just feel fat

I'm 16 weeks and have gained 4 pounds, so my brain knows I'm in track. However, my ego just looks in the mirror and sees fat. I have never had any type of issues surrounding weight which is why I'm so confused as to why I can't just deal with the baby bump. I tried shopping for maternity clothes tonight and left in tears feeling defeated. Is any one else having a hard time adjusting?

Re: I just feel fat

  • I struggled for a few weeks at the beginning of 2nd tri just feeling pudgy and not pregnant. It surprised me and felt like I was being vain. It's normal to have a challenging time adjusting to all these changes. Be kind to yourself. For me it passed once I "popped" and I'm betting it will for you too. Hang in there, you're close!

  • I feel your pain. :. I've been resorting to maxi dresses which are comfy plus they don't make me feel like I'm trying to squish into too small pants with a beer gut. I'm 14 weeks and I learned with my other two not to jump into maternity clothes too early bc they'll swamp you, fit poorly, and make you feel even worse. Try Ross or Old Navy for dresses.

  • I'm nearly 22 weeks and while I've definitely gained more weight than you (I'm at 14 lbs now), I still haven't "popped" and while my husband says he can tell I look pregnant, I still think that when people see me in maternity jeans and a top that I don't look pregnant - I think I look chubby.  I actually broke down in tears in my OBs office regarding this.  My OB says I'm on track with the weight gain, etc. and says everything else looks great as well. Still, until your belly does "pop" it can be frustrating. If you look back a week or 2 ago, you'll see a post I wrote entitled, "when will I start to feel pregnant." Good luck to you - know that what you are experiencing is pretty normal and our hormones can really play tricks on us during pregnancy so that might be why you are having issues surrounding weight. That's just my non-medical opinion. Good luck though!

  • I'm in the "in between" stage. I don't look pregnant but I am def looking thicker! Lots of leggings for me !
I was a bit amused at a woman who has been commenting on how wide my hips are ... I'll just let her say what she wants .. I'm like this because I'm pregnant!! People are strange and I think sometimes it makes them feel better to poke fun .. But seriously someone needs a mirror!

Don't be too upset .. Think that you are carrying a little one !

  • Thanks for your responses.  It's nice to hear that I am not alone with this feeling.  I'm sure once I pop, I will be rocking the baby bump like nobody's business Smile

  • I'm 18 weeks and have steadily gained 1lb / week since the beginning. I can see that I am pregnant, the baby bump is visible. However, when we are out, no one can tell I'm pregnant which confirms to me that I just look fat. I have always battled my weight and have issues regarding my body image, Before I got pregnant, I had lost 12 lbs and was on a roll to reaching goal weight in time for summer. Now it's all back, plus some AND the baby bump. I had knowing that to anyone who doesn't know I'm pregnant, they just think I'm fat.
  • I think that weight loss often precedes the pregnancy.... Happened to my mom and several friends. Not to me, so much, I am fat. "Obese" we like to say in the medical world. I haven't gained any weight yet, just 11 weeks, but some pants don't fit and shirts too! So I will go with its normal vote, because no one can tell this 250 lb frame is preggers and it still sucks when I have to go back to the closet. I'm too big for modern maternity too. So will probably just buy 23 x stuff as it comes up! I hope you have the best time with the cute stuff once you "pop"!
