Breastfeeding

Baby hates evening nursing... and other times, too. Help!

I'm baffled here. I nursed DD1 past a year with no issues. She loved to nurse and found it very comforting. The boob solved every problem.

DD2, however... During the night she nurses just fine and nurses herself into a happy milk coma. Some feedings during the day she nurses fine but usually pops off the second she's done- no playing around. Rarely will she comfort nurse or nurse to sleep during the day. She does love her pacifier for naps, however. If I offer the boob before she's really hungry she either pushes me away with her tongue or starts crying hysterically.

The past few days/week she has been getting increasingly fussy in the evenings which seemed normal. We moved her bedtime earlier and that seemed to help, BUT I always have to almost force her to nurse at bedtime, by patting her back, rocking her, shushing her, etc until she latches. Earlier this morning she screamed bloody murder for nearly 15 minutes while refusing to nurse until I finally got her to latch and she nursed for a while and fell asleep. Tonight she started crying close to her bedtime but would NOT nurse. I tried a bottle of pumped milk and she sucked down 2.5 ounces and passed out. I went ahead and pumped and got 1.75 oz from one side and another 1.5 from the other. (Usually a one sided nurser so each side was a little less than one typical feeding.)

I'm already pumping morning and afternoon for a total of 10-12 oz to donate to a BM bank and don't especially want to add an evening session in order to give a bottle every night but this freak out about nursing SUCKS.

What do I do? Why does she hate nursing? I have a pretty strong letdown but not ridiculous, and a generous supply, so I can't imagine that a bottle is THAT much easier for her. Help, please! I'm worried that she will eventually refuse to nurse at all and I am NOT interested in EPing.

  • I'm going through something very similar. I nursed my first for 2 years. He loved nursing and we never had any issues. DD seems pretty indifferent to it and like yours, will only nurse when hungry and rarely comfort nurses. I'm dealing with a forceful

  • My DD2 does all of the above. If she really really won't nurse I'll give her a bottle, but I try and "make" her BF if possible.

Giving her a bottle is so much easier....as she seems to like it better at times, but I also do not want to EP. It ma
