Is it typical for people address things to your unborn baby?

My mother and some other relatives are giving me cards and gifts addressed to me, my husband, and the baby. The baby is not yet born! Having things addressed to an unborn baby is making me feel more nervous about a miscarriage than I would otherwise feel.  

I know they are just over excited about the pending baby and I don't want to hurt people's feeling. I'm trying to come up with a tactful way to ask people to "back off" a bit. 

Anybody else experienced/experiencing this?

    I think you mean baby gifts or cards related to baby? If yes then that is normal. People are excited and don't have the same fears as you. I would just smile and let it go. If you feel comfortable asking them to tone it down then that is perfectly ok

    @ShellBear--Yes, I mean cards and gifts that say things like "Welcome to the world."...It just disturbs me. I guess I am more open to people talking through my stomach than I am to someone addressing the baby in cards and gifts as if it could live on i

    Yes it's normal, although usually people at least wait until the baby shower in the third trimester.  :)  Still, it sounds to me like your family is just super excited and can't wait.  As PP said, they don't have the same fears as you, espe

    It's normal.  I remember at Christmas time the baby had more gifts then me and he isn't here yet :-)   I think it is cute and love that my family is excited.
