Not hearing the heartbeat until 14 weeks?

Hey all,

Second question of the night!

I always thought most people got to hear the heartbeat between 9 and 12 weeks, but at my 9 week appt the OB-GYN said it was too early for the doppler to pick up...

I'm not worried because I actually got to see the heartbeat at 7 weeks with an internal ultrasound (I was seeing an RE), but I thought this was strange.  I'm so anxious to actually hear it!  Did anyone else have to wait this long?

Thanks!

  • Many places won't even try until after 12 weeks.

  • I am 13 weeks now and I heard the heart beat on the doppler a couple weeks ago at my 9 or 10 week appointment. but the doctor said I prolly wont hear a heart beat so don't worry if I don't find it. but they weren't able to find the heart beat on my nep

  • Thanks all, good to know that's normal :)
  • It all depends. My babies all like to "run and hide" from the Doppler. So we have had issues [to the point where we bust out the ultrasound] finding the heartbeat w/the Doppler before about 14 to 16 weeks.

Some doctors try at each appointmen

  • With all my previous pregnancies I didn't hear the heart beat until about 14-16 weeks. With my current one, I was able to see the heartbeat at 7 weeks with an internal ultrasound.

  • Thanks for all the responses!  I guess it's more common than I thought :)
