4 week old will not sleep in crib or bassinet

Mobile: 4 week old will not sleep in crib or bassinet

Hello. DD is 4 and a half weeks old and only sleeps if she's being held. If we put her in her crib or bassinet, she wakes within 10 to 15 minutes, day or night. Once or twice she has lasted 30 to 60 minutes but that's definitely not the norm. She sometimes sleeps in her swing for a couple of hours at a time.

So far DH and I have been sleeping in shifts so that one of us is always up to hold her, but we can't keep this up. He is at the end of his rope with sleep deprivation, and I have to go back to work in a few weeks.

We have tried: swaddling, white noise, waiting until we are sure she is sound asleep, and elevating one end of her crib. We're not comfortable bringing her into bed with us.

I know it's normal that a newborn will want/need closeness at first, but how long does this last? When does it stop being normal? How can we transition her to sleeping independently? Anyone else in this situation? I'm so envious of the ladies on here whose LOs are already starting good sleep routines...

  • Have you tried the rock n play sleeper? It has made our lives so much better! I think DD likes being on an incline rather than laying flat.

  • I've heard a lot of good things about the rock n play but I'm hesitant to spend that amount of money on yet another piece of baby equipment that may or may not work. Although at this point we may be willing to try anything just to get some rest. Is it rea
  • It may be kind of early yet, but do you have any kind of routine? Our daughter was having some trouble distinguishing night from day around this time, so we started a nighttime routine. It helped us tremendously and got DD on a good schedule. It could hel

  • My LO did this until 5 or 6 weeks. The RNP really helped her! Are you able to sleep propped up in bed with her on you. I used to prop pillows up and lie on that with her on my chest and my arm that was supporting her on top of a boppy incase it slid. I sl

  • Have you considered co-sleeping? DS hates his crib and has from the start. So it's helped us get more sleep.

  • I swear by the rnp. That thing is worth it's weight in gold!
  • One more vote for the RNP! Our DD would only sleep in our arms or her swing at the beginning. She would only really ever stay comfy in the swing long enough to sleep two hour stretches, while she would go 34 if held. We only felt comfy sleeping with her
