Opinions on Elliott for a boy

We aren't expecting yet but the name Elliott has been on our short list for a long time. It's the only male name I've ever heard DH agree that he really likes. The problem is that I have two reservations on this name.

The first is the spelling. We prefer the classic Elliott with two t's. There are also Elliot, Eliot, and other variants so I feel like Elliott will get spelled incorrectly no matter how you spell it. Am I correct in this assumption? Which would you consider the most traditional and accepted spelling?

My second reservation is that Elliott is gaining popularity as a girl's name, although usually spelled Eliot, Elliot, or some form of Elliette. I was really surprised to see this! Would a boy born in the next few years and named Elliott be considered as having a feminine name through his life? What are your thoughts?

What other names are like Elliott that we should consider?

  • Elliott should only be used for a boy.

  • I like Elliott a lot, too!  My first instinct would be to spell it the way you do-- with two Ts.

I hate it for a girl.

  • Love Elliott for a boy. This spelling is the most common so it would be the first one to cross my mind.

The name is ridiculous on girls.

  • Oh wow, already a consensus is that it is in fact a BOY name. :) That makes me feel so much better!

  • Elliott should definitely be a boys name and it's a wonderful one at that. I say go for it if you both love it!

  • I love it! Our son's MN will be Elliot (I think spelled this way, although we're still discussing - DH likes 2 t's).

I imagine people would spell Elliott differently occasionally, and this would be a more frequent issue for a FN, but still not e

  • I prefer the two Ls and two Ts too.

It wouldn't occur to me that Elliott in any of it's spellings (except maybe Elliette) would be anything but a boy. It is a boy name so I would still use it.

  • LOVE as a boy's name and I don't think you should worry about it. As for the spelling, it may take a correction or two, but that is the traditional spelling and I'd agree with you to stick with it.

  • Elliott is one of my all-time favorite boy names. I personally do not associate it with a girl's name and I would use it myself, in fact. If only my husband wasn't against it due to my crush on Elliott Stabler on SVU LOL! (To be fair, I loved the name bef
