Something that's been on my mind (tipping)

How did hairdressers get to be someone you're supposed to tip? To me, that seems like it should be something where the hairdresser sets their price, and you pay them that price. I just don't see how this got to be a tip-able job. I compare it to like, ordering a cake. You tell them what cake you want, they tell you the price, and then you pay them that price. I don't see it as being on the same level as a waitress who does not get a say in the price of your food.

Sorry, hairdressers...JMO.

  • The hairdressers I go to don't get to name their price, so I tip 20%.

  • I don't think the hourly wage for a hairdresser is that much.

And if they own the place, technically you don't have to tip.  But I do anyways.

  • Anyone without hourly rates (ex.- hairdressers, nail people, etc.) and those with under minimum wages (ex.- waitresses, bartenders, etc.) are tipped. Not all are the same pay methods but it's kind of a given that you tip them regardless.
