Taking LO's temperature...

What do you use? The last time I had to take DS's temp I used the rectal thermometer however; the last time we were at the pedi's office they used the temporal thermometer. How accurate are the temporal thermometers for at home use?(if you have experience with one) DS didn't seem too bothered by the rectal thermometer but, I know we are near the end of him tolerating that and I am sure he will not deal with an under the tongue thermometer. I will follow up with his pedi at his 15 month appt but I was just curious to see what you ladies have to say.

  • I actually do under the armpit and have seen the nurses at my pedi office do the same once he turned one.

  • Same as Kristin.  We have always done under the armpit and that is what they did in the hospital when she was born and at the doctor's office.  She's never had a fever over 100 so I've never found it necessary to be extremely accurate and my ped

  • We've been doing under the armpit since Jackson was 4 months old. We add a degree and we use a vick's thermometer.

  • We have a super quick rectal, and DS really could care less about it.  So I am still using that when I need to.

I do find this to be a "boy thing".  DS is pretty happy to have his boy parts liberated and available to grab so it's pret

  • We use under the arm too...and I didn't know about adding the degree, I will do this, it would make more sense I think. Side note...I hate taking his temp, he does not sit still long enough :) Oh well!

  • We do either under the armput or temporal. I don't feel like I need it to be that perfect, just a general idea of does she have a fever or not, and is it mild or bad.

  • The temporal ones are difficult to get an accurate reading because it has to be done in the exact right place. I use an ear thermometer which I like because it's quick and seems to be accurate.

  • I can't ever seem to get an accurate reading on his armpit-- it always comes our way low (like low 90s.)  He doesn't like us holding his arm still though.  The dr. office does it under the arm-pit, but sometimes it takes multiple tries before
