What happened to my rockstar sleeper??

My son has ALWAYS been a great sleeper.  He began sleeping fully through the night at 10 weeks and even before that we were able to give him a bottle and once he was done, put him in his crib fully awake and he would go to sleep in a matter of moments.

About 2 months ago we began weening him off of the swaddler.  We started by leaving one arm out per night, alternating arms.  Then we took both arms out but swaddled him across his belly.  He was still going to bed easily enough and if he woke up, went right back to sleep usually on his own.

About 3 weeks ago we took the swaddler away all together and he was doing fine.  Que his first time being sick.....since then (about 2 weeks ago), he will NOT go to sleep without being fully rocked.  Once you finally get him down he will be completely fine on his back but then will roll over onto his tummy where he will be fine for about an hour MAX!  Then he wakes up and is very difficult to get back to sleep.  On Average he's been waking up 3-5 times per night and it takes about an hour or an hour and a half to get him back to sleep.  Whether it's by rocking him or feeding him, etc.

I thought he wasn't sleeping right because he was sick and the issues started around then.  But he's not really sick any longer and it's getting worse night by night.  I think the issue stems around him rolling over.  He needs to stay on his back to sleep comfortably.  Otherwise he's restless and tosses and turns all night and wakes himself up because he's sleeping face down and doesn't turn his head (which totally freaked me out, until I confirmed with numerous friends and nurses/doctors that since he's able to roll over and hold his head up on his own that he will move if he can't breathe).

Please.  Help.  I know we got really lucky in the beginning but it's SO frustrating to be going completely backwards.  And moreso than being tired myself, I feel so bad for him because he's so tired when he wakes up and is so upset. I just want him to sleep well. He's such a happy baby still, but I know he's so tired.

  • I'd like to see a reply to this too.  Our baby girl used to sleep through the  night until she was 4 months old and got a double ear infection and then a cold after that.  She slept in a bouncy seat and sometimes slept for a long time...but

  • My DD was like that also. She finally got use to it and is now fine if she rolls on her belly. It took a couple weeks and some nights I'd just sneak in her room and roll her back over.

  • I did try rolling him back....that definitely wakes him up so I decided to leave him and try to sneak a couple of winks before he wakes up again.  So frustrating  :(
  • How many days has it been since your LO learned to roll from back to tummy?  DS started rolling on his 4m birthday.  He cried and cried for the first several days (both night time sleep and naps) every time he got onto his tummy.  It was us

  • He learned to roll over, from back to belly on both sides and vice versa over a month and a half ago.  And up until 2 or 3 weeks ago never did it at night.  We put him down for the night on his back and he'd stay like that all night and never
