Left hand or right hand?

Which hand does your lo favor? My LO grabs and uses his left hand more. His Grandfather is a lefty. Think its to soon to know?

Re: Left hand or right hand?

  • I feel like DS is using left more also

  • So far dd doesn't seem to have a preference. Daycare said it will become obvious with art over time. The scribbles will tend toward the left or right of drawings.

  • He picks up all of his food with his right hand. 99% of the time his left hand is completely clean at the end of a meal.

she prefers the left for eating food but the right for everything else.

  • She's still mostly ambi. When she holds a crayon, it's in her right hand, but spoons and stuff she holds lefty. I do think she will end up being right handed though.

  • From what I've read, and I brought it up with the pedi, you really can't tell for sure until they're closer to 2 or 3. He was telling me that two of his kids looked like they were going to be lefties but then around 2.5, when they became more dextrous, they swapped to the right and never looked back.

This is a topic that comes up in our house a lot because my husband's entire family is left handed and they make a huge deal out it. My husband and I both are hoping for right handedness simply because it's a pain for a lot of things beyond writing and scissors, like borrowing and sharing sports equipment.

Ha! DD seems to prefer left now. DH and I joke that she needs to switch to right or we will never be able to teach her to throw a ball. She will end up looking like that kid in the Volkswagen commercial where the dad is throwing all awkward and so is the kid.

  • I don't think it's too early to tell.  I'd say with near certainty that DS is a lefty.  He favors his left hand for pretty much everything - eating, grabbing things, etc.  His pediatrician remarked on it at his 9 month appointment.  I'm a lefty as well (and DH is a righty) so I cheer him on any time he uses his left hand and DH cheers him on when he uses his right lol!
