Any tips on pre-washing soft toys?

There have been a few posts about washing clothes, blankets, bedding etc which I have already done but I'm wondering if any of you ladies have tips on how to wash soft toys?

I have a few soft rattles and toys that state on the label they cannot go in the washing machine. The tags all pretty much say to "wipe with a damp cloth."

If all I do is wipe them with a damp cloth they won't really be clean in my mind. However, I also don't want to use soapy water and then not be able to rinse it well enough to get any residue off.

What do you do with soft toys that can't be washed in the washing machine? TIA!

  • Honestly, unless they are electronic in some way, I throw them in the wash. I'll put them in on the gentle cycle and the hang them on the line. I've never had a problem.

  • My friend told me to put hem in the dryer for a few minutes.  I guess it can't hurt!
  • A steamer can always help. I just got one for me and DH and we will be using it on the items hat could not be machined washed. Hope that helps you and if you don't have one I believe a lot if not all irons do steaming.

  • I threw a couple of small plush toys in a lingerie bag and washed them on gentle... they seemed to be okay (even one that had a rattle inside). I'm just air drying them. Of course, the one that said to wash with a damp cloth, I'm pretty sure I ruined.

  • Unless they are electronic, I put them in a tied-off pillow case and wash them in the machine -- then let them air-dry.
  • If they are new stuffed toys, I don't wash them in prep for the new baby.

If they are used, I toss them in the wash anyway.

  • Ditto some of the others.  Unless there is some sort of electronic, I wash them in the machine.

  • I was thinking about just filling up the bathtub with warm warmer and a little bit of the safe laundry detergent and rinsing them off that way. But it sounds like throwing them in the washer on gentle cycle might be a better option!

  • I actually took a chance this weekend on ruining a bunch of toys but it worked! I had bought some toys at a Just Between Friends sale, all slightly used.  I wasn't comfortable using any of them without disinfecting first.  Most all of them said
