Self Soothing

Ok so my DD is 14 weeks. So far we have basically nursed to sleep or occasional rocking or swing. If I put her down drowsy it is milk drunk and she is out quickly. I know we need to start thinking about letting her self soothe and I am a wussy and need to know how that goes. I can't listen to her even just lightly fuss without going crazy! Pathetic, I know. I keep telling myself just to leave her be but I can't. So tell me, how long did your LO stay awake before learning to sleep on their own? Did they cry, and for how long? She escalates if I do the shush pat thing. Usually she just gets louder until upset and I cave in and pick her up and rock her and then she is out and I just negated everything I just did : help! :

Re: Self Soothing

  • We were not successful in this until LO was about 5.5 months...we had a few rough days where we tried it at 5 months, but I guess it was too early because it didn't work (he just cried). So I started sitting in the room with him for naps until he fell

  • If your referring to CIO, 14 weeks is a bit young! The first time I let LO "soothe" herself to sleep AKA CIO, she was 5.5 months and it took 1hr and 10mins. If you can't stand to hear your LO fuss for even a minute, its not going to work for you and you w

  • We started swaddling DS with 1 arm out when he was 3 months (around the age of your DD now), and I noticed that he was able to suck his thumb and soothed himself.  Having said that, we didn't start sleep training until he was 4 months.

  • No definitely not CIO! No way can I handle that. Just wondering if I should be letting her fuss in her crib out if my going in makes it worse. Or how to help her learn to self soothe. She is to young right now I know but soon I won't be around to jump in

  • Does she suck on her fingers? Once DS found his hands, self soothing was easy. I still nurse and rock him to sleep. He will usually wake up 30 minutes after I put him down and fuss/cry for up to 5 minutes before he just sucks on his fingers and falls asle

  • I am one of the few lucky ones who's baby has always put himself to sleep.  He sucks his binky or thumb and within a half hour max, he out.

    He will/can also sleep anywhere.

  • I would just keep doing what you are doing if it works for you. When she gets to 5 months like PPs have said then you can start a new method if you want. I do nurse my LO to sleep at night and she falls asleep at the same time everyday. She is STTN and mo
