Anyone not serving food just apitizers for birthday party?

My dads family is huge. It would be like 80 total. I'm dreading spending tons of money on food. I was thinking about having the party from 1-3 and renting a place. What could I serve to get out of spending 500 on food if not more. No thanks! What's your plans if this is your concern?

    If you just want to serve appetizers then you should move the party time to two and have it end at four.

    I don't think it's tacky. I have been to plenty of kids parties where just cake and ice cream was served. Just put on the invite something about just serving apps and call it good.

    We had Hannah's party at 2 and served only snack type foods. We had a fruit tray with pineapple, strawberries and blueberries. That was a huge hit with everyone, especially the kids. We also had a veggie tray with ranch dip or hummus, pita and hummus/spin

    We are having LOs party from 10-12 at the ILs house. I'm making cupcakes instead of buying a cake and making finger sandwiches and fruit and cheese platters.

    80 people is a lot. Definitely serve it between meals and let people know that appetizers will be served. That is not tacky.

    I think appetizers are fine... alot of people will fill up on them anyways and people love them.... I also think the ideas of the 3 foot subs are good too and you can get big tubs of potato mac and coleslaw at a grocery store and call it a day ... i think
