Natural Birth

Hemorrhaging after Natural/Vaginal Childbirth

I delivered my DD vaginally without pain meds, but with Pitocin (water broke at the beginning of labor, about 3cm dilated and they wanted the baby out in 18 hours).

At the end I pushed for two hours, hard and with every contraction. After she was delievered I had some post partum hemorrhaging which was controlled rather quickly, but extremely painfully. The removal of the blood clots and continuous uterine massages (like 7 of them!) were way worse than the labor and delivery, not to mention all the blood loss).

I think this happened because I wasn't listening to my body at the end and just pushing hard and with every contraction, even if I didn't feel like I needed to because I was exhausted, wanted it to be over, and was under the threat of C-section because it had been 19 hours since my water broke.

Has anyone else experienced this and then successfuly not hemorrhaged by modifing the way they pushed with #2+? What did you do differently?

Re: Hemorrhaging after Natural/Vaginal Childbirth

  • I hemorrhaged with my first two though I had some retained placenta and I agree the after birth experience was way worse then the actual labor and delivery. I ended up pushing past contractions too and bruising my tail bone in the process . I think I was

  • I had hemorrhaging but it was the result of a retained placenta.  I had exactly the same pain experience as you during that nonsense though.  Ouch.  Definitely the worst part of the experience.

I was not under any time crunch (labo

  • I really think that sometimes, $hit happens and it's not your fault. There isn't necessarily anything you did or didn't do that caused you to hemorrhage. It likely had nothing to do with how you pushed. I would talk to your doctor about any possible ca

  • Having hours and hours of Pit during labor increases your chances of pp hemorrhage.  Your oxytocin receptors are flooded with Pitocin/oxytocin, and aren't as sensitive to your own oxytocin release (or even pp Pitocin administration) to clamp down

  • My daughter was born after only 4 hours of labour - no meds (besides laughing gas). I hemorraged after delivering the placenta. I was 41 weeks at delivery.

    Thanks for all the feedback.

Kegs - I'm red haired, fair skinned and freckled. My nurse said something about me being a redhead when I started to bleed too much.
