Thumb sucking??

So we did sleep training and pacifier weaning for ds2 last week. It was a little rough but not as bad as A was....

Here's my dilemma... Prior to sleep training J got his pacifier at nap and night time. We had to replug during the night sometimes multiple times because he would spaz and throw it out of the crib. Things were going well and now for the last 2ish days J seems to have found his thumb and is doing the sucking thing. Not to self soothe, more so while he is eating solids or when people watching and playing. DH is pretty stressed and is always "get his thumb out". He doesn't have teeth yet and he "may" be teething but I can never tell when they are teething until I see the little buggers coming up out of the gums. And the last couple nights he has had a harder time falling asleep on his own but still falls asleep within 5 to 10 minutes but not thumb sucking. I haven't seen him suck his thumb yet while he sleeps.... Although now saying that maybe tonight he will start. So do I give back the pacifier and take it away later? Or is the thumb sucking while awake more of an exploratory/teething thing and I just need to wait it out?

Re: Thumb sucking??

  • Both my boys gave up the pacifier at around 3-4 months on their own.  Nicholas never sucked his thumb- John quickly found his thumb.  He would suck his thumb to sleep, and sometimes during the day, like when he was tired or upset.  One day

DS1 is a thumb sucker and he started right away during sleep training.

DS2 does a bit of random thumb sucking, but not for sleep. He hasn't had a paci in a couple months and doesn't seem to be a true t

  • I totally forgot this is why N had his paci still!  He would suck his thumb without it, so we kept the paci hoping to avoid thumb sucking.  Lots of kids suck their thumb and stop at an early age, and some kids are still sucking at age 19

  • Is he truly sucking on it or chewing on it? If it's more of a chewing thing it's probably teething related.

I will say we did not take away the binkie mainly for that reason - any time she was congested or not using it as much, she would suck her

  • I don't have too much experience with pacis and thumb sucking cause both G and B gave those things up by themselves at an early age.  With that said, if it were me, I would take all pacis away and wait out the thumb sucking.  Like a pp said, I d
  • Thanks ladies! I stocked up on some new teethers today in case it was teething related.  DC told me LO did thumbsuck to sleep for naps today...but of course only napped 30min at a time so it didn't solve the cat nap problem he has there.  I thin

  • I say let him suck his thumb!! I really don't understand why people are so freaked out that their kid sucks their thumb, especially an under 1yr old! My boys are both thumb suckers- my older one has just gradually decreased the amount on his own. He re
