LO not chewing and talking with food in his mouth

my son is almost 17 months old and does not like to chew. he has never choked, but gags every once in awhile (maybe 2x/week) and i think it's because he chews once or twice and then swallows. he LOVES food, and basically eats like someone is going to take it away from him. he's generally pretty good about only putting in one piece at a time, but he seems to want to finish that one piece asap so he can get to the next piece. i am so scared he is going to choke for real one day. i took baby cpr and re-read the book every couple of weeks, but just wondering if this is normal, if anyone else's LO does this and what you do about it? he is getting his molars right now, so i'm hoping once they finish coming in he will chew better.

also lately he's been babbling while he's chewing and obv as he gets older i will teach him not to talk with his mouth full, but he doesn't seem to be getting it right now. any advice?

thanks!

  • DS does the same thing. He just also started cramming handfuls of food into his mouth and laughing hysterically while he does it. He does calm down and slow down after I remind him to chew his food up all the way.

  • I don't remember how old we started doing this but when DD would do that we would always say, "I can't understand you when you have food in your mouth.  Chew and swallow first."  Nowadays she'll sometimes scold me for doing it!
