Work Overload Issue-Help!

I am a consultant for a sales agency and I have a very large territory. For some reason, my employer has increased my work load in the past, oh 24 weeks.This is supposed to be a 9-5 job but lately I have been in at 7 and at home by like 8. My job includes driving all over 3 states.  I am totally exhausted, and have caught every sick bug that flies by. I have already mentioned to them that at a certain time I can't be more than an hour away from home and their response was 'Well, we'll see what the schedule looks like.' or "Nobody asked you to get pregnant.'

I want to ask my doctor for an excuse or recommendation that I be in the office more and not traveling as much. I feel like I'm jeopardizing my health as well as Jolie's. Has anyone gone through something similar with their employer? I am so frustrated/exhausted I just don't know how to approach this!

Re: Work Overload Issue-Help!

  • Some jobs just are not accommodating to 9-5 type schedules.  Do you think they are pushing you out because your are PG, or have there been layoffs or some other reason why your workload is increasing, like more business for the company.

    I don't know what advice to offer other than to start looking for another job if this one does not fit with your current situation.  Your doctor may write a note as you get farther along that you can't drive more than x hours a day or you can't be more than x miles from home, but a lot of doctors will only do that if you are high risk and/or in the last month.

    I would have been exhausted with that schedule too when I was PG.  I was asleep by 7 most nights.  Also, if you plan to work after having your DC, you may want to consider whether this is really a job you can have as a new mother.  That sounds like a rough schedule.

  • It sounds to me like they are trying to push you out because of your pregnancy.  Not only is it a crap move but it's discriminatory.

    I agree with the pp, you may want to consider whether this is the job you will want after you have the baby.  Your company doesn't seem to be at all supportive which will only grow to be a bigger issue.

  • I wouldn't leap to a discrimination cause in this economy, particularly since you didn't say you were the only one whose territory was increased.  That, and from what you said your territory was increased when you were about 36 hours pregnant, so that couldn't have been a factor.  I'd say it could be:

    a) They know you're going on leave and they want to be sure the territory is in good shape before you go - which could preserve your job, were layoffs to strike while you're out;

    b) They're making a significant marketing effort as part of a bigger revenue-generating strategy and everyone (or at least everyone in sales) is having to work harder.

    Have you talked to your manager?  Obviously they can't penalize someone for not being pregnant by sticking them with more work, but perhaps there's another solution.
