Normal behavior w/double ear infection?

We took DS to the doctor on Monday, after 2 days of 102+ fever and lots of inconsolable crying. They said he had an ear infection in both ears, prescribed amoxicilin and sent us on our way.

DS has been taking the meds since Monday evening and is not improving aside from not having a fever anymore. He is inconsolable for an hour at a time about 3 times a day. I'm talking screaming, crying, hitting and biting me, thrashing about so badly that I'm worried he's going to hurt himself :( Nothing makes him stop. His appetite isn't great either. The one bright spot is that he's still sleeping great, which I'm told is rare with ear infections.

If your LO has  had a double ear infection, does this sound like reasonable behavior? Are the meds not working, or does it really take the full 10 days for him to feel better? What's your experience been?

UPDATE: Spoke with his doctor and she said there is a bad bug going around right now that causes full body aches and thinks that might be the culprit (in addition to the ear infections), due to his runny nose and loss of appetite. We're keeping him on the amoxicillin for now. I was hoping she'd have a quick fix!!

Re: Normal behavior w/double ear infection?

  • That's not too surprising to me. My ped said it really could take up to six weeks or more for all the fluid, etc. to go down and for them to feel totally normal again, even after antibiotics. Poor baby :(

  • I would be concerned about that.  Yes, some discomfort will still be there until all the fluid drains, but it sounds like he is still in a lot of pain and I would worry that the amoxicillin was not enough for the infection or something else was going

  • I cannot help you with the behavior aspect of it because DD had no signs that she had a double ear infection when hers was discovered (no fussiness, grabbing at ears, fever- nothing at any point).  It was discovered at one of her well baby visits.&nb

  • My gut tells me the amoxicillin is not working. We have a follow up appt in a week and a half, but I can't wait that long. I'm going to call and leave a message for his doctor and hopefully she'll get back to me tomorrow (she's only in the office 3 day

  • It usually takes a few days for the anti-biotics to work.  I would continue giving your son medicine for the full 10 days.  Be careful if they want to give him Claritin since our son had night terrors from it.

  • When DS had a double ear infection, he still was acting/feeling horrible for about 2-3 days after starting antibiotic.

The pediatrician called in a rx for numbing drops for his ears and it seemed to help.

Hope your LO is better soon!

  • A friend told me with my first to make sure and always keep the numbing ear drops (benzacaine SP?) on hand.  Your pedi can prescribe them and should without another appointment.  They cure nothing but they numb the ear for relief.  I would

  • are you giving him some ibuprofen?  the pressure of the fluid behind the ear can cause a lot of pain even if the bacteria are dying due to the antibiotics.  If he isn't having fever, probably the Amoxicillin is working, he just still has the flu
