Holding his head up already?

Hey, my son is 2 weeks and a day and today while burping him he held his head up when I sat him up, he was wobbly, but looked to the left and right before it seemed like his muscles gave out... (I supported his head in time so it didn't flop back or anything).

I was just wondering if that was normal? I was surprised because I thought it was a milestone for a 2 month old or something, but he has done it three times today. Not only that, he has lifted his head while doing tummy time on mine or my husband's stomach since day one, I don't know if that's normal or not.

I don't want to strain his neck or anything, so should I keep encouraging it or support his neck still even when he is trying to hold it steady? Anyone's little one doing/have done the same thing?

Re: Holding his head up already?

  • Yup! Both of my boys could lift their heads when we were tummy to tummy before we left the hospital.  And neither really liked to be held "like a baby." They both want(ed) to be held up to our shoulder so they could pick their heads up to look

  • When I did skin to skin right after LO was born, she lifted her head up off my chest. It was brief, but I was floored. It's not normal :) Yesterday during tummy time she lifted her head up and turned it from side to side. She can hold it up for a good few

  • my DD is the same.  Her newborn pics (taken late, at about 3w5d) were of her lifting her head and holding it. she's always done it, and likes to not be too tight in the sling in the beginning because she lifts her head up while she's in there.

  • Definitely still give him neck support, but mine was doing the same thing in his first week!  It will improve on it's own; you don't need to change anything about what you are doing.

My ltitle guy will be 3 wks tomorrow and he's been doing the same thing since we came home from hospital -- both DH and I have been surprised!  But we continue to act like he can't do it, support his head, etc .

  • My DD (who is three weeks today) did the same thing.  When I hold her up on my shoulder prior to nursing, she turns her head and tries to root on my face, usually snagging my nose or chin (she does this to my husband too, we call it 'zombie baby').&n
  • My DS holds his head up pretty regularly when I hold him against me. He's been recognizing light sources the past few weeks, so he's been working to look around. I'll support his head to keep it from snapping back, but a few times he'll actually end up fl

  • DD started holding her head up early too, but only now can she do it for an extended period of time without the bobblehead.
