My DH has finally decided he's ready to start TTC, but I'm still on the pill. I've heard that you should wait at least one cycle before trying because of birth defects. Has anyone else heard this?
They want you to wait a few because they want to give you cycle time to adjust. It will just mean they may be a little off with the due date. NO biggie.
haha I misunderstood your post sorry! the doc told us to use condoms for 2 months so they can get an accurate due date.....but if you're off a few days you're off a few days
doctors used to recommend that years ago bc they wanted to ensure the hormones were out of your body before you start TTC. But now you don't need to wait, the pills used today are generally such a low dose of hormones that they are out of your system in a couple days.
However, just bc they are out of your system does not necessarily mean you will resume cycling right away. Some women O right away after going off, some women wait months to O. So some docs recommend waiting for a few months in the hopes your cycle regulates, so you know when you are O'ing and also so, in case you do get PG right away, they can more readily determine your EDD.
long story short, you can start right away. sorry for the book.
First off welcome to TTC.....getting off BCP can mess you up, so be prepared for wonky cycles. My doctor told us when we're ready just try, doesn't matter if you wait a month or something after stopping BCP. Some people get PG right after stopping BCP, some don't.
A few recommendations... Read Taking Charge of Your Fertility...it is very helpful in understanding everything TTC related. Don't use the bump "ovulation calculator" once you stop BCP, your cycles may vary after stopping BCP and it will lead you to believe you OV when you still might not have OV. If you want any kind of ticker, try using Fertility Friend, its free and gives you tutorials when you first sign up to help you. A helpful link: https://gpnest.wordpress.com/
We started trying right away. Just be aware that your body may be a little off for the first few months. Charting is really helpful with this, as are OPKs, so you can tell when you ovulate and when to bd. GL!
ditto pp. getting off it a bit early is more so your body has time to start regulating. you should be fine ttc right away, or waiting a few months is good too. definitely start taking your prenatals tho.
I'm going off BCP this month and then we're going to TTC in January (hopefully) provide I'm O'ing and all that. Good Luck and here's to a late 2009 baby!
I got some great advice here when I asked some interesting questions about TTC (I'm 1 month into TTC myself). Best advice, charting. Just start by marking when AF comes, and when you get "intimate." I just ordered "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" from advice on here, recommend you do same, though I haven't even cracked the book yet!
GL! Hopefully we'll both have good (great!) news to report in the next couple of months.
BTW, I got off BCP early Oct., AF still hasn't come. Can't decide if it's a blessing or a curse...!
Hardest part, and I didn't do this myself...don't tell everyone you're TTC. Sounds obvious, but it's an exciting time for you, and you may want to share. Trouble is, if it takes a while, everyone knows it, and they keep asking about it. I'm ALREADY getting that, after just 1 month!
(sorry for the book!)
