DS Does Not Respond to his Name

My DS is 2.5 and has a speech delay due to having had fluid in his ears.  He has been in speech therapy since he had to the tubes put in in October.  Since then he has gone from 5 words to too many to count.  He still does not respond to his name all the time though.  I would say he responds less than half the time to me and pretty much never to a stranger.

I asked his ST about it today and she kind of brushed me off saying "Ya, I thought he would have stopped doing that by now but he hasn't.  He is a mystery kid." First of all, I am not sure what she means by that but I am feeling like she thinks he may be Autistic.   His other ST has told me before that there is no way that he is.  BUT now I am wondering what may be the reason he does not respond to his name.  I mean, is there another explanation other than Autism or does not responding to their name pretty much always indicate Autism??  The only other behavior that he does that I question is walking on tip toes some of the time.
