different diaper rash remedies?

DS has been sick for 11 days now. He started out with some kind of virus (coughing/congestion/runny nose, etc, but also diarrhea for 6 days straight). I took him to the pediatrician at a week, after he didnt show signs of getting better. Turns out he also has a bad ear infection as well (the kind that causes blistering on the eardrum). So he's now on Augmentin to combat that. His diarrhea (and resulting diaper rash) had JUST cleared up, but now they're both back, due to the antibiotic, and it's bad! Diaper changes have been traumatic; he literally sobs. We've been using Max Strength Desitin (the 40% zinc oxide), and trying to keep as dry as possible, giving him more "air time", etc. It's not working. Balmex doesnt seem to work for him, nor ButtPaste. A recent suggestion means I'm running out for Aveeno Oatmeal bath stuff tonight. Does anyone else have any outside-of-the-box thinking for a bad diaper rash that won't go anyway, since he unfortunately will continue to have diarrhea at least for the next week due to the antibiotic). [And yes, I'm trying to give him a BRAT (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) diet to bulk things up a little, but because he doesn't feel well, he isn't eating much of anything. It's a struggle just to get some Pedialyte into him.]  I feel so bad for my little guy. Anyone have any good ideas?

Re: different diaper rash remedies?

  • Could it be a yeast rash from the antibiotics? That probably won't go away on its own. Try putting anti yeast cream on it to see if it gets better. You can use athletes foot cream...I think it's called Lotramin. I think you can use the cream Monistat b

  • Sounds like it could be a yeast infection from the antibiotics.  Try using lotrimin at every diaper change.  Make sure his skin is completly dry before you put it on, then use a thick layer of regular diaper cream to seal the lotrimin in.&n
  • Absolutely check out the yeast infection. We mistook a yeast infection as a diaper rash and DD had it for three weeks before we finally treated it as yeast - it went away within 4 days.

If that doesn't do it, and it really is a diaper rash,

  • This absolutely sounds like yeast.  We had a bad go of RSV + possible UTI that resulted in two shots of Rocephin and it just killed DD. She needed to be physically restrained for diaper changes. Our pediatrician prescribed Nystatin - another antifung
  • Thank you so much, everyone! I didn't even think/know about a yeast infection. I just know that this is the worst diaper rash (if it's that) that he's ever had, and it's breaking my heart just to change him. Definitely will head to the doc to make sure. T

  • We just took DD in to the doctor yesterday for a diaper rash that just wouldn't go away. She said something (a new food, recent antibiotics) caused a reaction on her bum and it had turned into an eczema-type rash. It looked similar to the way a yeast i

  • Mine was like that about a month ago.  I ended up giving him a bath every night and using desitin or a&d and powder combo.  Could also try vaseline to protect his little bottom.  His little bottom cleared up in a few days.  Good Lu
