Water - hydration - big deal?

I am not sure why but I am not one of those people who requires a lot of liquids to feel hydrated.   I have never followed the eight glasses of water a day rule, which to me seemed way too much for my needs.

Since being pregnant, I have been forcing myself to drink more water, though I am not getting the recommended amount.

I want to do the best for my baby but I also feel like babies have been born for generations without mothers drinking water around the clock.

What are your thoughts on this?  Are you being extra careful with water intake?  Do you find it makes a difference in how you feel?

  • I'm the same way, in regards to I can typically have a glass of water during the day and be fine.  However, when I'm pregnant I drink about 90 oz at least a day.  It's super important to be hydrated for the baby and for delivery.  If you

  • I kind of agree. I don't think you need to force fluids until you are uncomfortable to reach an arbitrary water quota. But, water intake makes a big difference in how your body operates, especially while pregnant.

  • I try to drink as much as I can because it really does help cut down on Braxton Hicks and now swelling.  I also don't drink as much as is recommended just because there's no way I can drink that much a day.  But at various points in my pregnancy

  • I have never drank much in the way of liquids, during pregnancy or not. I have weekly BPPs and I have above average fluid so I'm not worried.

  • It's REALLY important to drink plenty of water whether you're pregnant or not. Our bodies are made of approximately 70% water and it's required in pretty much every biological process. You may not think that you need that much water to stay hydrated, but

  • I usually drank 8 8oz glasses of water a day, pre-pregnancy.  I've got this giant plastic jug that holds the recommended daily amount (it's purple and lugging it around totally toned my arms too).  Not that I felt I "needed" the hydration, bu

  • I can tell an ENORMOUS difference on days I drink water and days I don't. When I don't drink water, I am bloated, uncomfortable, cramping, nauseous, and a whole host of other things. I feel like a normal (almost non-pregnant) human being when I drink 80+

  • I've been a bit anal about water consumption because of my angry, vengeful uterus. I notice when I don't drink enough (even though I don't feel dehydrated). I have to drink at minimum 2L a day or I hurt real bad.

  • I am not great with drinking a lot of fluids either. I went to the dr today for my 36 week appt and I had an NST scheduled. The baby's heart rate was really high and the first question my dr asked me was how my fluid intake was. Then she checked my urine

  • I am actually the same way although I don't have any philosophies behind it regarding how women have birthed for centuries. Alot of women and babies also died for centuries as well.

I just don't get thirsty all that often.  However with

  • I'm pretty sensitive to water intake and can tell a difference when I have or haven't had enough.

That said, I do think it's a big deal during pregnancy: baby's amniotic fluid levels depend on it, your degree of swelling depends on it, and when y
