My husband and I were invited to our first Catholic Baptism for our friends baby. There is a lunch after the service. Do we bring a gift? If so, what do you recommend? Please let me know if there is anything else we should know!
A book of Bible stories is our go to gift for baptisms, a check for anywhere from 20 to 50 dollars would also be appropriate, depending on how close you are to the child.
IE if I'm the godmother, or the child is my niece or nephew I'd likely

You can give anything you want. Most people will bring something. I have seen gifts ranging from picture frames, jewelry, clothing, keepsakes, money, giftcards..etc
EDIT PP mentioned a bible, children's bible or children's bible stories, I loved
A religious themed book would be nice. I would skip the bible, I have tons of those that we've received as gifts. Tomi dePaola has illustrated many books about saints which would be nice too. I wouldn't expect a non-Catholic friend to go to the Cath
DS got a variety of things: a Rosary, a toddler Bible, a couple little prayer books, one that's cloth and is made by Taggies that he can handle really well himself right now, and even a fairly non-religious picture frame as well.
I believe Catholics have a separate Baptism service, and they often call it a christening. It's not folded into the regular Sunday worship. In general, stand when they stand, sit when they sit, and absolutely do not go up for communion
I'm in the NY area and if I'm the God Parent I set up an account for them that I deposit into for birthday, Christmas, First Communion, Confirmation... (that I will give to them when they leave for college) This was done for me when I was a child and I
I received a Bible, some rosarys, and cash for my savings account (according to my parents), however, you could always call the church and ask them what would be appropriate.
I always buy a piece of sterling/silver plate or a julep cup, depending on boy or girl. I don't buy crosses or bibles, weird rule, but it's one of my things.
Unless you are immediate family or a godparent, I'd skip the personalized/religious items (bibles, crucifix/cross, rosary, etc). Family & godparents will usually give those items (at least in my family/circle of friends).
we are catholic and we usually just buy whatever you'd buy for a birthday that is age appropriate, clothes, toys, etc. I personally try to get something more personal like a cute frame that says baptism or something. Or even a photo album so they can put
When my daughter was born, most people gave $50.00. (That is the norm among our family and friends for Baptism) We also got the Noah's ark Little People set which DD loves and I thought was a cute Baptism gift!
DS received some savings bonds, some cash, a personalized picture frame (which we put a pic of him with the godparents), a book of children's bedtime prayers, some clothes, a few other random things.
A few of the things that we have have recieved have been... childrens bibles, precious moments Catholic Bible, personalized crosses, precious moments figurine, crusifix necklace, childs book of saints, stuffed animals, personalized jewlery box, pic album
