Question on hip carry

I have an Infantino Mei Tai and the directions say you can use a hip carry once the baby can sit up on his own. Does anyone know why they have to be able to sit on their own? The carrier provides trunk support, so I would think they would just need head control. Are they just covering their butts on this? Thoughts? Insight?

My LO is already over 15 pounds, and my midwives said it's more about weight and head control...

ETA: The reason I want to try a different carry is that my LO will only tolerate the carrier if he is falling asleep or already asleep. I think because he likes to easily see my face or else be able to see out. He can't really do either in the front carry facing me.

It's not going to work well with a 2 month old. Try a high back carry if you want some variety.

Another thought...how is he sitting in the carrier? If he can't see out, the carrier is probably coming up too high on him (shouldn't come higher than the middle of his ear). You can fix that by either rolling the waist or by simply tying it h

I would definitely try a high back carry for the reasons your listing. I would also make sure that when you try to wear your baby awake, you immediately start walking. Outside is better than inside.

Just to clarify, I would need someone to assist me to use the back carry, correct? That is fine for when we're out, but I was just hoping there would be a better carry for when I'm at home by myself. Oh well. Thanks for all your help!

You'll need assistance for the first time or two, but you can learn to do back carries by yourself.

I do the high back carry by myself all the time. The first few times were tricky, but I went to a local babywearing shop and asked them to show me. Then when I got home I youtubed mei tai high back carry and there are a bunch of how to videos. Good luck!
