Laxative?

DS is 18 months old and has had trouble pooping since he was 9 months. He holds it in and ends up giving himself horrible diaper rash. We tried everything that we could and finally the doctor prescribed him a laxative.

We've been doing the laxative for a few days and it has worked miracles! No problems at all. My question is, the doctor told us to continue to use this as long a necessary but on the bottle it says to use it for no more than a week... I'm concerned about using it past what is recommended (on the bottle) but I don't want to go back to having the same problem. Has anyone else had a child on a laxative? If so, how long did you give it to them for? What did YOUR doctor recommend?

  • Follow the directions on the package. That is how the manufacturer intended the product to be used. Using more than directed for longer than directed can be dangerous. Also, you don't want the kid to be dependent on laxatives to defecate.

  • My DS gas a very limited diet due to sensory issues so he has bad constipation. His pedi told us to use half a dose of miralax everyday to help him out. That turned out to be too much so we give it to him every three days. Our pedi is fine with long term

  • My 18 month old DD has had constipation issues since very early on, so bad she would be screaming daily and had 2 ER trips and we tried everything! The only thing that works for us is miralax (prescribed by doc but I just by the target brand on the shelf)

  • We use Miralax too  -- usually 1-2 tsp every other day. Our doc said it is safe for them to use every day (I think she said children with Downs Syndrome have really bad poop issues, maybe from meds or something, not sure, and they are prescribed it e
