TTC After a Loss

NTTCALR: my dog is having issues

We went out of town last weekend and left her at a new kennel that's closer to our house and half the price of what we paid at another kennel. When I went to tour it, I just didn't really like it. There was nothing "wrong" with it per se, it just wasn't as nice as the other one (hence the cost difference). ANYWAY, I pick her up on Monday morning and they said she had "stressy poo," which I thought was weird cuz she's never had that before. So, when I bring her home, she proceeds to go #2 a lot  more frequently than normal, and there's blood in it. I freak, call the vet, make an apt. for Tues morn. By then, she's looking much better: no blood, firmer stool. I canceled the apt. I thought she was slowly getting better, but I took her on a walk at lunch today, and she went, and there was some redish matter in her stool again! I am so worried. I'm taking her to the vet in the a.m. and I won't cancel this time. I feel like such a horrible doggy-mama! Has anyone's dog had this and been ok?

  • Stress can cause loose stool and stool w/ diarreah.  And depending on the dog it can take different amount of time to clear up.  THey will probably just give you some meds to help but it's nothing serious.  Since the dog was in a new place that may be what cause the loose stool where as at the other place,, she was used to going there so didn't stress.

  • Poor thing!  What kind of dog is it?  I think some breeds are more prone to stress than others (that might just be my perception though).

  • She's a pomeranian. I'm not so much worried about the diarrhea as I am about the blood. :( If it was just loose stool, I'd give her more time to "work it out."

  • I agree with PP.  It could also be that she picked something up there, like an infection or maybe ate something that he/she wasn't suposed to.  I know my boxer once ate geese poo (with out us knowing of course), and got sick a few days later.  The vet checked her stool and said that's what happened.  He gave us an antibiotic and it cleared her belly issues right up.

I hope your pup gets better quickly!

  • Not to scare you I always associate blood and a loose stool with coccidiosis. I've seen it in my cattle so many times. My cat got it because the cattle had it and it ate in the barn at the time. It's caused by eating food that has come in contact with bird poo.
  • My dog went through the same thing and after freaking out, going to the vet, and running up a bill all they had to tell me is that she was stressed.  She was....very very stressed.  It did pass though.

  • It could be any number of things. Coccidia, Giardia, pollups on her GI tract. ?I would take a sample in to the vets and have them run a fecal on her. ?If it doesn't turn up anything on the basic fecal you may have to run a more expensive test(s). ?She could have picked up something at the boarders, or it could be something thats been manifesting itself for a while.

If there's ever blood somewhere it shouldn't be always err on the side of caution and go to the vet. ??

Oh gosh, is this very dangerous? I just hope that whatever is wrong, I didn't jeopardize her life by waiting to take her to the vet. Thanks for all your feedback! I'll definitely let you know what happens tomorrow.

Oh and yes, my dog has had blood in her stool. ?She ended up having Giardia. ?Its a *** to get rid of. ??

  • My BIL's dog picked up Coccidia at Doggy Day Care. The vet figured he got it from sharing another dog's water...dog is fine now, just needed to see the vet and get treatment.

  • Every dog HAS Coccidia. ?Stressful events/dirty environments can cause it to flare up. ?If she has it she'll need antibiotics for a little while and a couple of fecals to make sure its gone.
  • What I'm talking about is pretty easy to get rid of. We sometimes need to help the cattle along but the cat got antibiotics and I had to move his food bowl. Since then he's been fine.
  • Thanks again everyone for all the feedback! I feel a little better now. :)

  • Yeah - mine has gotten that after we've boarded him before.  For him it's definitely stress related.  Usually it will clear up but the last time he had quite a bit of blood.  The vet wasn't really worried about it and in about 2 days it was gone.  GL and I hope your doggie is feeling better soon!
