This probably gets discussed on this board a lot, but after sifting through a few pages I haven't been able to dig up an answer for myself.
A little background on me: DH and I are planning to TTC #1 starting this fall, and would like to have a home water birth.
The issue: neither my, nor DH's insurance cover any local midwife care/birth center births. Mine doesn't cover any. DHs only covers Certified Nurse Midwives. There are two birth centers in the area, but there are only certified professional midwives, not CNMs at these particular birth centers. In fact, I think there's only 1 or 2 CNMs in Oregon (or so I've heard).
So, my question - has anyone had any luck getting their birth center/midwife prenatal care/home birth covered by insurance? Or should I plan on footing the bill? Any advice?
TIA!

Re: Home birth - Insurance?
Our insurance is a Christian health share type of plan so technically not insurance... (www.chministries.org) It will cover home births/free standing birth centers BUT we didn't think we'd be getting pg so we were on the lowest plan possible... which o

We saved for our midwife's fee so we could pay for it ourselves without any debt in case our insurance did not cover it ($3500).
She billed insurance for us and they have covered the first few prenatal visits as out of network, even though the pl
Hello from another Oregonian! I'm not too sure how accurate that there are only 1-2 CNMs in Oregon??? We are using a CNM through a freestanding birth center in Portland. Our insurance (ODS) will only cover CNMs but with out of network coverage. So we a
Our insurance supposedly doesn't cover home births; however, my midwives use a billing company who knows how to deal with insurance to get a good payout. We ended up getting almost everything back!
It all depends on your insurance, and where you live, I believe, but because our insurance doesn't have any in-network providers available within 30 or 100 miles that do home births, that was all the justification needed for us to be pre-approved for o
