Alice also as Alyse?

For the last couple weeks DH and I have been rolling the name Alice around for our daughter and can't come to a decision. When I brought it up to a cousin for a second opinion she asked me how I'd spell it. I told her we'd spell it like it's always spelled and she replies, "Like Alice in Wonderland? Or spells it like Alyse? Because I like it spelled the second way a lot more."

I've personally never seen Alice spelled any other way and think it looks odd. Is that really a legitimate alternate spelling?

Re: Alice also as Alyse?

  • I have never seen or heard of Alice being spelled Alyse. I personally don't like that spelling...I mean it's kind of cute, but I just prefer the original spelling.

  • I've never seen it spelled Alyse. It doesn't seem like a legitimate variation. It just appears to fit the random y trend. ;)

    Please, spell it Alice.

  • If I saw Alyse, I would pronounce it Uh Lease. It doesn't have the same pronunciation as Alice, IMO.

  • I would pronounce Alyse differently - ah-LEES. Like Elise, sort of. Alice is a classic name. No need to mess with it.

  • It's a variant of Alice but I'm pretty sure it's pronounced Uh - Lease.

There is a series of science fiction novels based on Alice in Wonderland where the title character is Alyss.  I have a friend who loves the books and was going to spell her daughter's name

  • Lol thank you guys, that's what I was thinking. I'm definitely into spelling things traditionally. It's never been a thought in my mind to spell Alice any other way.

I had a professor in college named Alyse, pronounced Alice. She was in her 50's, FWIW, so it's not a new or made up spelling. But for simplicity, I'd probably stick with Alice.

  • Alice is such a lovely name. There is no need to mix up the spelling.

  • Well my cousin is also 14 so maybe she has a friend with that name and associates it like that? Either way it caught me off guard and I immediately shook my head. Some parents these days are ruining classic names.
