Natural Birth

Home birth - Insurance?

This probably gets discussed on this board a lot, but after sifting through a few pages I haven't been able to dig up an answer for myself.

A little background on me: DH and I are planning to TTC #1 starting this fall, and would like to have a home water birth.

The issue: neither my, nor DH's insurance cover any local midwife care/birth center births. Mine doesn't cover any. DHs only covers Certified Nurse Midwives. There are two birth centers in the area, but there are only certified professional midwives, not CNMs at these particular birth centers. In fact, I think there's only 1 or 2 CNMs in Oregon (or so I've heard).

So, my question - has anyone had any luck getting their birth center/midwife prenatal care/home birth covered by insurance? Or should I plan on footing the bill? Any advice?

TIA!

  • I found my home birth CNM by calling and speaking with other CNMs. Maybe someone can suggest someone for you??

  • I know you want a home water birth, but if that's not an option financially I just wanted to mention that I had a really great natural birth experience with CNMs in a hospital setting. Everyone was very supportive, and I think people need to realize that

  • How awesome that they'll cover a CNM.  I had a CNM for my home birth and still had to foot the entire bill =/  The one and only negative of the entire experience (which was still totally worth what we paid).

  • Our insurance supposedly doesn't cover home births; however, my midwives use a billing company who knows how to deal with insurance to get a good payout. We ended up getting almost everything back! :)

  • It all depends on your insurance, and where you live, I believe, but because our insurance doesn't have any in-network providers available within 30 or 100 miles that do home births, that was all the justification needed for us to be pre-approved for o
