Catholic Baptism

My husband and I were invited to our first Catholic Baptism for our friends baby. There is a lunch after the service. Do we bring a gift? If so, what do you recommend? Please let me know if there is anything else we should know!

  • A book of Bible stories is our go to gift for baptisms, a check for anywhere from 20 to 50 dollars would also be appropriate, depending on how close you are to the child.

    IE if I'm the godmother, or the child is my niece or nephew I'd likely

  • You can give anything you want. Most people will bring something. I have seen gifts ranging from picture frames, jewelry, clothing, keepsakes, money, giftcards..etc

    EDIT PP mentioned a bible, children's bible or children's bible stories, I loved

  • A religious themed book would be nice. I would skip the bible, I have tons of those that we've received as gifts. :) Tomi dePaola has illustrated many books about saints which would be nice too. I wouldn't expect a non-Catholic friend to go to the Cath

  • DS got a variety of things: a Rosary, a toddler Bible, a couple little prayer books, one that's cloth and is made by Taggies that he can handle really well himself right now, and even a fairly non-religious picture frame as well.

  • I believe Catholics have a separate Baptism service, and they often call it a christening.  It's not folded into the regular Sunday worship.  In general, stand when they stand, sit when they sit, and absolutely do not go up for communion

  • Unless you are immediate family or a godparent, I'd skip the personalized/religious items (bibles, crucifix/cross, rosary, etc).  Family & godparents will usually give those items (at least in my family/circle of friends).

  • When my daughter was born, most people gave $50.00.  (That is the norm among our family and friends for Baptism)  We also got the Noah's ark Little People set which DD loves and I thought was a cute Baptism gift!
